Removing your motor

I should have made this thread when I did my 700 conversion & could have supplied better photos.

Fran has asked me for this, so here it is.

1/ First thing is disconnect the battery neg terminal.

2/ Drain the oil from the frame, then from the sump plug on the motor, tighten up the sump plug.

Remove the oil pipe next to the sump plug. Watch out for the Oring on the oil pipe, do not loose it. Place the oil pipe into a plastic bag & tape up the bag, so oil does not spil on to your floor

3/ Drain the coolant.

Follow the photos for the next steps.

4/ When it comes to undo the engine mounts, the last mount to be removed is the top head mount 3 bolts. The motor must be supported by a jack before removing any engine mounts.

Nice one Kev! Out of curiosity does anyone have an idea on its weight? The bikes total dry weight is 165kg and it would be interesting (perhaps irrelevant too) to know how much of it actually comes from the engine.

Kev made those "how to remove an engine" instructions for me as I changed the motor on my xt with the help of a friend. I didn't weight the engine on it's own but let me tell you this, with the engine off, I was left with the frame, the fork and the two wheels attached, I could lift the whole bike with one hand effortlessly. It took me and a friend to lift the complete engine to install it!

Ok, I could carry it on its own in a box, squatting carefully to standing position, as I did when I bought it, but it was like a weight lifting competition!! That is where the bike weight is. in the friggin' engine! Damn that engine was heavy. I'll never forget it.

So even if you put is on a heavy diet it will never be a very light bike I guess. Could we also say that a heavy engine is likely a more reliable engine? I mean how far could an engine like this go considering that money is not a problem and you could change it internal parts if needed? Just another useless curiosity

Its about 39kg

I have been told....

Haven't removed my one yet, but the instruction are tip-top Kev..
