Ongoing maintenance: Does the timing, valves etc need doing?
Hi all, as this forum is closing, and I've learned a LOT from it, there's one thing I'm not comfortable checking/doing and that is on cylinder head.
My bike is a late 2011 XTX660X, and I have religiously kept oil and filters, plug changed, chain waxed etc. But the one thing that I haven't seen mention here is if any valve timing or valve gaps need checking, or for that matter anything other than the routine servicing that I do on it as detailed above. As I won't be doing anything other than what I do now, is there anything needing checked generally on cylinder head, or elsewhere while I'm asking? Many thanks guys. |

Yes you do need to check your valves
Hi! Yes you do need to check your valves every 2000km, as described in your service manual (Google it or search on FB) I adjust mine at 2k and inlet valves was to tight and outlet was to big (usually other way around) so it is a necessary check. Read and learn to know your bike, much easier than human relationships

Thanks Gussen69, I was hoping to get a dealership to do it as I'm not confident....

valve clearances are a hot debated subject but they definitely do NOT need checking every 2000Kms / 2K. I guess that was a typo error since 20, 000K is more likely. I have two XT660 engines and neither needed adjusting until in their 50, 000km's and even then, only just but could have been left as they were. The correct thing to do is check them at the correct mileage / Kms but in reality, as evidenced by so many, leave everything until your bike is at least 25, 000 miles / < 50, 000K's

I agree. I did my valve clearances at 12k miles and again at 45K. Small adjustments to be made and the engine definately didnt sound rattly. Its worth doing as You can also clean the radiator, change fluids and generally give the bike a thorough once over.
