Clutch not disengaging properly

Hi,

I found this evening that my 660z’s clutch will not disengage (e.g. the rear wheel spins when on the centre stand) properly. I expect to have to change my clutch, I am almost at 25000 miles, but I expected this to be the result of my clutch not engaging, or slipping.

I have the opposite problem - does this indicate that I need a new cable (I cannot identify any obvious cuts / stretching at either end of the cable). I am out of adjustment on the cable, screwed all the way out at both ends.

I did find a coolant leak the other week and fixed this. Not sure if relevant, so added this anyway.

Thanks so much,

Ed

IMHO you have two options...Option A,change the cable. Its possibly stretched and is the cheapest option.
Option B,change the clutch if the cable does not fix your problem.

At least that way you got a new clutch system and you could potentially change the springs/upgrade to heavy duty ones too whilst your doing it.

The rear wheel spinning while on a centre stand and in gear is normal, its called clutch drag and is not a good reason to start thinking you have a problem, check the oil first, if it is dirty change it. 25k miles is not really enough to wear out the clutch slip rings and friction plates unless riders have been slipping it alot or holding the clutch in for long periods of time. A better test is to sit on the bike, off the centre stand and drop it into gear with the engine running at idle, you should get a jolt when putting into gear but should not have to use the brakes to stop the bike moving forward, if you do then adjust the cable first.

Thanks - both of you, I am out of cable adjustment, but it sounds like I can wait till the new cable arrives to replace it. I already have a new clutch set, including heavy springs, but did an oil change last week when the coolant went... doh!

Either way, looks like I can ride to work OK. I may be back! Thanks again.
