Three month trip on XT660R - What spares to take ?
Hi guys.
I'm taking my 'new to me' 2004 XT660R from the U.K to Mongolia. Through central Asia. I'm wondering what spares to take. So wondering what the known weakness are for these bikes. I'll be changing any old bearings and the clutch plates before I leave. Currently I'm taking: Ignition Coil. Main relay Throttle & Clutch cables Fuses. Engine gasket set. Any inherent weakness that I've overlooked ? Thanks, Ted |

That'll be a great trip. The XT is made for it too. There will be a lot personal choices on kit / spares too.
I'd zip tie your spare clutch cable to the original for a pit-stop swap. As for the throttle cables, they're not as easy to swap over out in the field so, for me, I'd put the new ones on before you go. Same with clutch plates, if you doubt the originals will last 15k. Perhaps have a look at a new rectifier too. These have been known to be a gremlin waiting ro wake up. It's probably more about carrying less weight whilst future proofing the bike. I'd (this is just me now) practice removing both tyres with tools that you plans to carry. That way you get to find out what you actually need and what you forgot about. (New tubes, +patches+ some sort of lube).Punctures are a fair possibility and it's not fair that that experience should leave you in a flap on the plains of Mongolia.

Cheers guys.
I've done a few big trips before. www.touringted.com And I've been a member of Horizons for 15 years I'm actually a Motorcycle mechanic so not so worried. It's just always great to get experience off people who have owned this bike to what lets them down. Even though I've been working on bikes for nearly twenty years, you can't get better info than the rider base. Just picked up a second up Reg/rect too. I'll obviously try them all first |

.....also make sure your cush drive rubbers are new since they last precisely diddly squat miles. Plus, to that end, (because shag'd rubbers cause a shag'd sprocket carrier bearing).....check your bearings.
