New xtx fail

Hello, thanks for the ad. I’ve just bought my first bike which happens to be an xt660x, always like the look of them. I’ve been riding Vespas and lambrettas since I was 16. (Now 45&#128529 but the commute from witney to Oxford I do everyday is getting tiresome on my scoots with small fuel tank , large potholes and ever busy traffic. So...... on Sunday I take my 06 xtx out for a pre commute ride. Disaster after 4/5 miles.. red light comes on then after 1/4 mile the bike dies. Luckily near a pub🙂. So I have a cup of tea and have a think . Right... my better half brings out a new battery, bike fires into life and get home. I put a test on battery terminals on tick over ( and low revs)and it stays at 12v so it’s not charging🙁. Do test on regulator =seems fine. Must be stator????? Any help: advice would be appreciated........ cheers Barney.

Hi and Welcome...not that good a start to XT ownership but its all part of the 'getting to know you' phase init..

How low is your tickover?..1450/1500 is the advised tickover.

Has the bike died again since your initial ride?..I know your using a new battery..

Hi, and cheers for the quick response. Yes the same problem with new battery... red light comes on and bike dies after a further quarter of a mile. Latest up date is a used stator arrived in the post this morning ( from previous owner)🙂. I would like to check that stator before I fit . Does anyone know what the readings should be? Cheers again Barney.

Have you spoken to the person who sold the vehicle to you?..I ask as they might be able to identify any issues..

I don't see how you can test the part unless its connected to the bike tbh..

whats a stator btw?..

Copied from the workshop manual:

Stator coil resistance 0.224-0.336 ohms @ 20 degrees C

Battery charging voltage should be 14.0v @ 5,000 rpm.

I'd recommend getting a manual, I think you can still get a free download on the forum.

Welcome to the club!

just looked it up for you in my manual :
stator coil resistance (at 20C = 38F) 0.224 - 0336 Ohm

So...we have a new bike, with an unknown tickover speed that's had a new battery as the old one failed..

The original system was tested at tick over speed,we now know that at 5k rev's the system should be pushing 14 volts out....

I would suggest putting the original battery back in and trying again at 5k rev's?..that's assuming its been fully recharged and is confirmed to be holding a charge.

Again thanks all for replys and taking the time to look for info. Im not sure of tick over speed tbh ( sounded quite normal if that helps&#128529 I just blipped throttle a few times and voltage regulator didnt rise. The bike has the stator cover off atm and waiting for gasket to arrive so cant run . Fingers crossed this used stator is ok. Where is a good place to buy new / used spares. Cheers Barney.
