Rear Hub eats Bearings and itself
Hello
Hope you guys can help. I while ago when i had a puncture fixed in portugal they refitted but missed the cush drive spacer. The bike kept eating wheel bearings until i finally realized what was missed a few 1000 miles later.... The bearings in the hub on changing pretty much fell into the hub, so a second hand wheel, new cush hub ( if thats the name) new spacers and axle purchased... no more wheel bearing issues...... until upon changing a tyre in the UK, the hub bearing has now the same issue again, maybe 6000 miles after all the work done... cush hub looks a little worn too. althoughg bearings seem fine.. cheers dave Last edited by nethen; 28-09-17 at 19:33. |

I had a problem like that on my wife�s mto3. Bearings went put new ones in then within a week gone again, what I found was the shop we bought the bike from had over tightened the nut and squished the inner spacer buy about 2mm. So when the wheel was done up the inner part of the bearing was being pushed in by about 1 or 2mm does not sound much but when riding the force on the inner part of the bearing made them eat themselves. So we got a new inner spacer then never had a problem again .Just a thought if the shop over tightened the wheel

Thank you for that. The only part I have not changed is the inner spacer. The tube bit...

I could not tell mine was squashed but when I got the new one there was about 1.5 mm difference between the two tubes . It was 100% the problem that was killing the bearings on the wife’s bike. Hope it helps fix it

I replaced all 5 wheel bearings less than 5000 miles ago. The wheels are out for re coating at the mo and I've found that the sprocket hub bearing is distinctly rougher to rotate by finger. I put this down to the cush drive rubbers being worn and allowing the sprocket hub, and bearing, to be pulled / stressed by the chain out of line, (not precisely 90.00 degrees to the axle), whilst under drive forces .
The over-tight axle nut / duff spacer / crushing the race is an interesting thought . I better check that manual for torque settings in future.
