Battery info reqd
My 09 Tenere is on its original battery, it measures 12.8 when I charge it, when installed on the bike after a few days it reads 12.4. With the ignition switched on but no engine running it goes down to 12.0. I have a couple of big trips planned this year and mindful of the fact that low voltage can do funny things to the system I decided to buy a new battery. It is a oem Yuasa and I have just added the acid and fitted the caps like the instructions said. It measures 12.8, the instructions don't say any more. Is it ready for fitting now or do I have to put it on the charger for a few hours as well ?

They usually recommended a bit of a charge once filled but a 10-15 mile run would do just as good .

Hi Crofty,
I would change it if you already have not. I am still learning the details of battery tech, but I have noticed on many solar/battery powered devices at work, that such a voltage drop over time and under load - 12.0 is pretty minimal when under a load. I think you will get by with your current battery if you ride a lot, but if it sits for a few weeks, change it out. Unless you don't mind bump starting occasionally. 0.3 Volt doesn't sound like much to an electrician, but in an ELV computer governed system it can make a big difference. |
