HELP: Where to find an affordable replacement engine?
Hello fellow XT-riders!
The unthinkable has happened. After some 78,000km of torturing my bike through all corners of Europe the engine of my XT660R started to sound very sickly within the last couple of weeks. After an inspection today my friend the mechanic concluded, that one of the bearings is seriously screwed and that the most advisable and cost effective would be to change the whole engine. I'm still shocked. Did something like this happen to one of you too? Are there any good sources for affordable used XT engines? Please let me know. Every day of not being able to ride is like being emasculated. Greetings from Austria

Sorry to hear of your troubles mate.
Italy has been, and still is, the best source of used XT660 motors in Europe. They are much cheaper than UK sourced ones, tend to have done a lot less Km and the lacquer doesn't suffer so much from the UK's heavily salted roads, plus of course - Italy is a lot closer to Austria for shipping (or collecting)! There is one on ebay.it at the moment with 7,800Km on it for EUR600. http://www.ebay.it/itm/YAMAHA-XT-660-R-ANNO-04-16-MOTORE-COMPLETO-COMPLETE-ENGINE-7-800-KM-/262837115365 |

How did that happen? Isn't the engine supposed to be nigh indestructible (emphasis on 'nigh')?
Also, swap for a Raptor 700 engine? Dunno how much trouble that would be but this is as good an occasion as any to slap in a bigger motor if possible. |

Thank you guys for your condolence.
Every mechanic i met so far told me that my XT will easily exceed 100.000km. Now they are quite shocked too, as all my friends and family as well. We believe that it started off with the cap of the radiator getting leak, which led to water evaporating out of the radiator body. But because the cooling cycle didn't run properly as a result, no water from the reservoir followed, so the true error was undetected for quite a while. Unfortunately all of this happened in the middle of the pyrenees, after 1800 km of our 6500 km trip last year. First it seemed that only dust and mud covered up the radiator causing the coolant lamp to light up, but we soon found out, that this couldn't be the problem. The true reason was eventually found out by a mechanic back at home. Needless to say that the bike must have gone through a lot of unnecessary attrition to that point. update: In the end I decided to go for another used XT660, as every other option would have been an economical disaster. At least all extras and stuff can be exchanged, so a part of my old R lives on... Today I found a very nice bike in the near of Vienna and bought it. Built in 2008, 13000km
