If you are going to lace a 17" rim to the stock XTR hub and you're not changing the rear 2.75" rim to something larger, then there is little point. Generally the smallest/narrowest "sporty" 17" road tyres need a 3.00" rim, which is 0.25" wider than the stock rear rim on the R!

You will need to change out both rims for something more suitable depending on the tyre sizes you want to run with. You will also need to use lowering links at the back or your bike will end up with a nose-down attitude and a lot of weight over the front which will make things very "twitchy".
