Dropping fork legs
Hi I am new to the forum so before I ask my question a quick intro. I am 67 and just got back into bikes when I retired at 60. I bought a transalp and then a NC700x when they came out a few years ago. It a great bike and I have had quite a few long trips on it. I like Eastern Europe and have been there a few times but my last trip this year to Ukraine made me decide that the NC can,t hack bad roads very well and I have always fancied a XT660Z so when I got home last week I went out and got one. So now to my question. It has a TT high seat and is way to high for me so I have fitted Lust lowering links and things are looking better for my 31" inside leg. So today I thought better drop the forks. Now the top of fork tubes on this bike stand 10mm above the top yoke. I expected them to be flush. So do I drop them another 10/20mm or has it been dropped already ? Also if someone knew the torq values for the pinch bolts that would help. Thanks in advance for any help you can give. The links I fitted lower the bike by 40mm

Torque for the pinch bolts are 23Nm for the top yoke and 21Nm for the bottom - not as much as you'd think, so be careful! With a 31" inside leg, you should be able to manage perfectly well on a bike with a standard seat and standard suspension so, as Pepsi suggests, why not deal with the root of your problem and change the seat? Lowering the suspension does funny things to the geometry and handling. You could even come out with a profit! TT seats are in demand and make almost as much as they cost new when sold through ebay! |

As it looks like it has been lowered already I will leave the forks alone. The bike is fitted with Hyperpro fork springs and a Hyperpro rear shock spring so that may account for the forks be lowered already. I have already fitted links and tonight shorted the side stand so I will give it a run with the high seat and see how that goes. I am trying to source a standard seat on the forum and elsewhere and if and when I will fit that and maybe then I can decide to fit the original links back. Thanks for all the advice/torq values and info on the seats.

It does. Raising the forks 10mm through the yokes is in the installation instructions for the Hyperpro fork springs.
