End of life drive rubbers... Get me home?
Hi all,
I'm living out in the sticks atm, and know the bike needs a new set of cush rubbers. But I have them at home, which is about 200 miles worth of commuting and homeward travel away. Might be paranoia, but I am not sure how much play is too much to be riding with.... Would one of you wonderfully experienced people be able to give me a idea on the basis of the below video, showing movement? https://youtu.be/1W0UPtWrVVU |

You could chance a really smooth ride home....#
Or whip them out and pack them with some old inner tube (if you have access to such a thing), even cheap bike innertube might last

I have considered the option, but have no center stand either ( waiting at home to be installed this weekend, least I am almost prepared !) And phoning round local bike shops didn't turn anything up....
So is that about the amount of give down to the metal? I'm not sure because I have never opened it up and looked inside before, but know I will be soon! If they fail will I know about it suddenly and dramatically? |

Thanks for the help, both of you. I played safe, took some bricks from a skip and propped her up, a trip to a localish dealers had me sorted.
Lubed it up proper, as advised, though I am not sure how much is gonna fly out as I'm moving - I may have been too generous! I also forgot to check if the lube will react with the rubber.... I'll check the state of them again when I have finished my trip tomorrow. (The lube I used was decent stuff, but from the 1980s!!) For anyone who arrives here for info, though not many here will be as clueless as me.... The wear needed seeing to, it feels far better to ride, but there was nowhere near to any metal on metal contact as far as I could tell; I could have just done the trip, as advised above. Hopefully this will provide a bit of of a video based answer to anyone asking the same question! |
