Seeing your bike in another thread my guess would be its a resistor for the LED indicators so they don't flash to fast having been changed from the standard bulbs?

Cant find my Haynes book at the minute but I do have a photo of the Tenere wire diagram on my phone and going by the wires coming out of it, it looks like the immobiliser? Will have to wait for someone else with a little more knowledge to confirm or disprove this.

You won't find that in any manual! Your bike has had it's standard immobilser bypassed and what you have in the picture is a Chinese immobiliser emulator. See here...

What do you know about the history of the bike? What keys did you get with it?

Personally I would be a little wary of your bike's previous life. Did you do a history check on the bike? If you bought it from a dealer I'd be inclined to take it straight back and ask a few taxing questions.

what does the emulator do ? allow use of a standard non chipped ( non immob) key?

In a nutshell... yes.

Trouble is tea leaves use them to get stolen bikes back up and running, and if you've got one fitted there's a good chance your insurance will be invalidated as your bike will be easier to steal.
