Main beam not working

Hi,
A long time reader, first time poster.
I got my Tenere just over a year ago after searching for the right one for me.

It has lots of mods including Full Akrapovic exhaust, stage 3 power commander.
Heated grips, 12v socket etc.
I suspect the headlights were somehow upgraded too, but don't know for sure.

The problem I had was after a few weeks I noticed if I made a hard right turn the main headlight beam would turn off, but all I had to do was switch the full beam on then off again and the main beam would work (until I turn right again)
Then after that the main beam started to work less and less.

I didn't worry about it too much as I only ride in the day time, but last week I put it in for it's MOT thinking he can sort it at the same time, but after 4 days of working on it he called me and said he can't fix it, he's tried all sorts.
(something about it being DC and not AC and also It's a xenon system?) <---this confused me.

He thought it might be the Relay at 1st but after swapping them they seem ok, so it can't be that.
I'm not clued up on electrics at all so no chance of me fixing it.
He said that the lights show signs of life when the bike is just starting, but while running there's no power going to the main beam.

Has anybody any ideas?

I would really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance

Doug (Deke)

It sounds like your bike has been fitted with an HID kit, which makes things more tricky to diagnose as there is so much more to go wrong with them over a conventional bulb (especially if they're cheap Chinese stuff).

Could be the ballast unit, the ballast's earth, might be the ballast supply or the wiring from the ballast to HID bulb. It could be the HID bulb itself, or its holder. Sounds like something was/is loose and got looser up to the point where it stopped working.

If you want my honest opinion... junk the HIDs and go back to standard incandescent bulbs. They are a lot less trouble, easier/cheaper to fix, spare bulbs are readily available, they're better in fog/rain/snow and they don't dazzle/annoy other road users.

Thanks for the quick reply.
After reading a few things on here I was hoping that this would be my solution to be honest.
How easy would it be to change back to the default setup?
I'm quite useless at these sorts of things so would probably need the mechanic to do it.

Fairly simple, but a lot depends on how badly hacked about the headlight wiring loom is. I've seen some fairly woeful DIY HID installations! Nothing is irretrievable though; it may require a bit of soldering/heatshrink and maybe some bulb connectors. The worst case scenario is you'll need to get hold of a headlight/sidelight loom which is just over 30 from a dealer, which may actually be easier and quicker. TBH, for future reliability and ease of replacing bulbs it'll be well worth putting in the effort, even if you have to pay someone to do it.

Ok, I'll have a word with the mechanic today about it.

Thanks again.

Hi there,

Ok an update on my situation.
I've recently moved home so not had much time to sort the bike so nothing has changed really, the mechanic gave up on it (didn't charge me even though he had tried for a quite a few hours)

So now i'm trying to find an auto electrician in my area.
(none of them seem to work on bikes! )

Meanwhile i'm gonna try changing the bulb for a new one, see if it's as simple as that (would the bulb still glow a little when i turn the engine on if it was broken?)

I've had a look at a few websites but can't seem to see any bulbs that look the same as mine, would anybody have a link to one at all?

kind regards

Doug

PS added an image if that helps..
