Oiling DNA filter

I thought it would be a good idea to clean and service my DNA stage 2 filter at 6000km after some off road trips.
The bike was having some slight surging between closed and open loop throttle positions. It felt if the air/fuel mix was not the same as it used to be.
So after cleaning the filter with degreaser, then soapy and clean water and let it dry properly, I sprayed it with an air filter spray recommended by a bike mechanic for this type of filter. It has an orange/pink color and he suggested spraying it just enough so the filter element was covered (inside and out).
It now feels if the A/F mix is even richer than before. It's heavier on fuel and the backfiring is much louder than before.
I'm going to redo the filter servicing with K&N filter oil spray, BUT I'd like to know how does one determine how much to spray on and does one spray on the inside and/or outside of the filter ??
The air obviously traverses the filter from the inside out

I'll see if I can get the Service Kit in S Africa. It will probably say in the instructions how much filter oil spray should be applied.
All I wanted to know really is how much one has to cover the filter element with the filter spray? Inside and outside, and how thick? Or is it just a guess ?

DNA oil is a liquid in a bottle, rather than an aerosol like K&N stuff used to be (that also comes in a bottle too these days).

Basically you just run a line of oil along the edge of each raised pleat on just the dirty air side (inside on the Z) and wait for half an hour or so for it to soak in and diffuse through to give an even red colour. Recheck that all the cotton gauze to see if it evenly coloured; if there are any pale patches put a drop of oil on them.

Thanks Pleiades, that makes sense.
I've heard of this way of oiling the filter but thought that the DNA oil was also an aerosol like the K&N
The spray-on that I used was quite sticky and after covering both sides of the gauze thoroughly I'm sure it restricts airflow to some degree.
