Error 01

Hi guys. You are my last hope
(if wrong place, please moderator for a transfer in the right place)

Riding on the Albanian wilderness, big stones, deep water, suddenly its turn on red LED temperature. And Er-1. (Motor does not shut down).
I thought its overheated and shut off the engine to check what is going on. After the initial inspection, I assumed that everything is ok and tried to start the engine.
And here is a problem, the engine turns on but doesnt want to start. I tried to enter the diagnostic mode but without success, the error Er-1 means no contact with the ECU and additionally can not start the engine.
I dismantled my motorcycle, I checked the main plug at ECU by the clocks and even a few by the way, but I didt noticed any damage or marks of water. I put a candle in the pipe to see if there is a spark - no.
I thought it was the end of my adventure and time to look for transport to the base.

Something else struck me and I tried to start the engine in a different way.
I Hold the starter button pressing down the ignition switch to ON and surprisingly I have succeeded ! :-D
Of course, immediately the error Er-1 appeared, but this method was ok to the end of my trip.

And now the question : what can cause this defect?
The battery is OK - Works willingly

Can someone suggest what else should I check? Any advice?
Does it mean that ECU is (partly) dead?

Not necessarily. Er-01 is as you say, quite literally a communication error between the ECU and the dash - the dash is not receiving a signal from the ECU. This is why you couldn't enter the diagnostic mode.

You have done the right thing in checking the connector at the dash, but you need to trace and check every last piece of wiring back to the ECU and the ECU multiplug itself. Make sure the terminals and connections are good and that there are no bare wires or damaged insulation. It could be just a case of drying everything out if you've been riding through a lot of deep water?

Because you did/could get it to run, I would suggest the ECU is OK. It could also potentially be an immobiliser fault? Have you got another key you could try?

BTW - Did it actually overheat when the temperature warning LED lit up? Or was that a false alarm?

Thank you for your response

I'm not good in electric things.
Can you point me what exactly do I have check in wiring? Do I have to open (unpick) the main wiring?
Can you show it to me on diagram?

Little correction about drowning my motorcycle - it was splashing all the time by water from deep puddles.

Yes, I tried another key - no change.
Motorcycle wasn't overheated. I was suggested by the widgets red light (lights together with error code)

You don't have to unpick the loom. Just remove the petrol tank and trace the loom back from the clocks to the ECU looking inside each connector on the way and checking that it (the loom) isn't worn through at any point. You basically need to do a visual check first (nothing more technical) just to make sure there is no physical damage, corroded connections, loose connectors or anything obvious that is causing the problem before delving deeper.

I'll see if I can find and annotate a diagram/photo...

I already did and found nothing suspicious except tarnished plug to pump relay. (I have cleaned it)
Mayby I have to check something in electronic multi meter?

There's not a lot you can check regarding the actual dash/instrument display.

Are you still able to start and run the bike using the "hold the starter button and turning the ignition switch to ON" method you described earlier?
