Xt660Z Tips
Hello, I have a Tenere XT660Z 2011 of course, what is the best reco...mmended Gearing Sprocket to use, I do some highway, not much but do dirt and will be doing the Simpson Desert. Also what clicks should I have the front suspension at, I have it at 18 (+), I am 85kg.
Any ideas. |

What gearing different riders prefere to use are very subjective and very much about personal preferences and what kind of riding they do.
I changed the original 15/45 to 15/48 and are much happier with that. Would also like to try 15/47 at an later occcation.

As above - it's all subjective. You can do nothing but try different ratios and see how you get on.
I tried a 14T front and found it a pain - forever changing between 1st and 2nd gear off road and made road riding less enjoyable. I was advised to ride faster off-road, advice that proved good and the answer to dealing with the stock gearing for me. However, it entirely depends on what your "off-road" is? For forest trails, lanes and sand then stock I find fine. In fact lower gearing is more of a hindrance than a help in sand. For technical stuff though, deep mud, ruts, rocks, river crossings etc, I can well understand why you might go for lower ratios. Don't know the Simpson, but I'd guess it's more open, sandy/dusty and relatively flat? You're probably not going to (unless you look for it) be doing a lot of walking pace technical stuff? |

Gearing is personal and my experience is lower gearing gives you more punch off the mark. More punch out of corners and more grunt to get that front wheel in the air.
I run 15/48 and find it a good compromise. A few more horses and a six speed box would allow higher gearing and not jeopardise low down pick up. I haven't done the Simpson but have mates who have and if you're going straight over the dunes the tenner is not the machine. Far too heavy. |

Possibly correct, but there are people who've ridden the big KTM twins, big BMWs etc across the Simpson.
It's all to do with confidence. Soft sand is a mongrel, but ok if you keep the momentum up. For the record, the Simpson crossing involves struggling across 1100 sandhills, some fairly piddly but most are a bit of a challenge on a heavy bike. Momentum is your first best friend, followed by fresh jocks. Lots of punters fall off at least once. Errrrm... One of my mates slipped off just over the crown of a dune, I came whistling over the top, couldn't stop and ran over both his wheels. Poo flew out of both of us. I'd do it on a well set up Tenere, but never on a stock one. I'm not good enough. Wider tyres, run fairly soft, as light a load as sensibly possible and common sense. Don't do it summer imo. |

And you're spot on with the confidence thing. Arse way back and give it the berries. I cut my teeth on sandhills and if you're on a lightweight missile i.e. motocrosser style it's great fun riding on top of the sand. Too heavy and underpowered for its weight and you're constantly riding the edge bogging down, front end going all over the place. Takes all the fun factor out of it. Still, lots of people do it. And to conquer that many dunes on a beast, once on the other side would give one a sense of accomplishment I guess. Lots of rain is your friend in the sand. |

Thanks guys
i have been riding for most of my life, but for some reason i feel the XT660 might be to heavy, i am thinking a Dr400 should have been the choice.
Dont know what i will do, thinking just give it ago if dont work trade in when get back. cheers |
