Tenere Wheels and Spokes
How on earth do you get these wheel to remain black, just bought my 2011 and the wheels have faded with ****e weather and the spoke rusting.
Now I've seen on the auction sites that your get spoke wraps which slide overs the spokes like a plastic cover and are available in loads of colours, Do a google search for images. Now i would assume we would have to put some sort of grease or oil on the spokes first to stop any water eating away at the steel spokes . Any views on the spoke wraps 19.99inc delivery fleebay. My Tenere would look great. will post a photo if i decide to buy some. |

Don't know about the spoke covers.
However, without doubt, the stuff you need to prevent further corrosion is ACF-50. |

I spent an hour yesterday, with a little pot of ACF50 and a modelers paintbrush giving each spoke a very light application, including the nipple. Yes it takes time, but my bike has seen 5 winters and the corrosion is negligible. Be careful not to overload it, it takes very little and you don't want it running off on to your tyres. As for the paint fade on the wheels, you can restore it with a wipe of silicon oli, back-to-black bumper care stuff. ACF50 is also the stuff you need to stop corrosion all over the bike, yes it's expensive, but go for the 1litre bottle with a hand pump (about 30) rather than the aerosol tins (about 15 each) as it lasts much much longer, is easier to apply and more accurate. edit: If you use spoke covers, you'll end up making matters worst, they will hold the salty water longer.

Does acf 50 help clean the spokes or will it just stop corrosion? Doesn't look like mine have ever been cleaned

Tenere Wheels and Spokes
Quote:
Not necessarily a bad thing. Most people end up with tatty-looking rusty zinc-plated spokes because they try and polish them and are over zealous with their cleaning regime. If you try and polish them, all you'll end up doing is removing the protective zinc plate, exposing the steel to oxidation and they go rusty quicker than left alone! Just wash them off if you must clean them. Never use anything abrasive (Autosol etc.) and avoid using anything acid (which a lot of car wheel cleaners are). ...a case in point! I have never cleaned my spokes in eight years, just washed and recoated them with ACF-50 every once in a while and they ain't too bad at all.
