Adventure spec bash plate
Just wondering what peoples experience with the adv spec bash plate? When the bike falls do you find that the bars hit the ground before the side of the tank or are they just there to protect the water pump area just in case. I'm in 2 minds about what protection to use because I pm reluctant to add another 10 kegs in engine bars at the side of the fairing.
I was thinking about the puig engine bars as they seem ideal but not sure which bash plates they're going to be compatible with. Any advice would be much appreciated Thanks Dan P.s for an xt660z ten |

Bash is very good, got mine second hand for half price but I don't think I would pay full price.
It does the job of protecting the engine very well but those bars protecting water pump are a bit OTT, same thing could be achieved with just more protective plate I'd imagine. Also it does nothing to protect the brake lever. This bash plate will make no difference to the tank area in a crash but stock plastic shrouds are doing great job and are cheap to replace. It will be the handlebar hitting first most of the time anyway. After numerous slow speed offs I can't see a point of having engine bars, they would do more damage than help. |

I like them. The bars covering the water pump are very scratched up after a low speed slide off a sandy track into a ditch. Absolutely saved the water pump. Worth every penny.

How much are the replacement plastic side panels on the tank and where do you get them from? Never seen them come up for sale.

Replacement plastic (ABS) crashpads are about 35/40 euros each. Not really cheap in my book, but doable.
I protected my bike's engine sides and softened hits on the pads by adding width to the steering bar, by putting washers to mount counterweights further away. They will take more of the falling force, for low-speed crashes this proved effective, but I'm sure higher speed crashes will bring serious bending to the counterweight's mounting threaded bar, possibly breaking it and making a mess to extract the inside part. Also, steering bar will be more prone to bending (that's why I mounted a more rigid, solid and straighter 0.28'' aftermarket bar). You gain some, you loose some. I too don't see the point of side bars, while I'm looking for a used AdventureSpec bashplate too (new is WAY TOO expensive). |

riding a XT anywhere you might come of will end in tears oneday..
The water pump has to be protected... I'm very lucky I got away with it for so long before I put the bars on.. They are B&B plate with Yamaha ten bars.... http://imageshack.com/a/img543/7785/exn3.jpg .

Ok , Sorry... I should have added to my post... The Tenere engine bars will NOT fit the XTR they need to be moded.. Yer get them from your Yamaha dealer....

No longer available
From what I understand, the Yamaha engine bars are no longer available. The next closest thing look to be the Puig ones, but having seen the Adv Spec set up, I'd be inclined to just pony up the cash. It's a great looking bit of kit and really nicely made.
