Newbie from Kazakhstan

Hi All, just joined on my 62nd birthday! I am a Brit working in Kazakhstan and have 2 bikes here. An XT660Z Tenere and a Honda CRF450X. I bought the Tenere second hand in UK where it had been modded by Touratech and used for a ride to Morocco.

I shipped it to Kazakhstan and use it for exploring Central Asia. I previously had an XT660X that did well at the altitudes I ride at (15,000ft +).

I have Akrapovich exhaust but no other mods except the Touratech protective add ons. From my experience so far I am thinking I need to upgrade the suspension and do something with the ECU/Fuelling. The engine seems to run hot and on a hot day the air from the fan actually burns my left leg.

Before I commit to anything I would welcome suggestions from other riders experience.

Cheers

Welcome on board mate.

I think you'll find any improvements you make to the suspension will have very positive effects - particularly living in Kazakhstan! It's a weak point, especially the shock, and on used bikes over 12-15K miles the shock spring will have passed its best (and it was made of cheese in the first place!)

The same goes with the fuelling - anything is an improvement. They run way too lean in standard trim and getting the air/fuel ratio somewhere down to into mid-13s:1 (from stock 14+:1) will make your riding experience much more pleasurable, better throttle response, broader spread of power, more low down grunt, cooler running and better economy. The best bit is you don't have to break the bank to achieve this either! Have a read these threads:

Long Story

All, thanks for the replies. On my way to the US on business so I am inclined to pick up a Power Commander there. Researching options for the suspension.

I will upload some pictures of my exploits in the region soon.

Pepsi, the life story needs to be told but it may have to wait until I retire. Still working on the bucket list!

Cheers
