Exan exhaust fitting problems anyone?
After a lengthy delay and some faffing about I finally received my Exan titanium with carbon cap oval exhaust today. Not the XBlack one, but the more traditional oval shape.
Anyway, try as I might for the past hour, I just can't get it to line up and fit. I think the link pipe is either too long, or the bends lack angle, or its a bit of both. The link pipe and bottom end of the silencer are both really close to the frame and the edge of the mudguard plastic. While at the same time the silencer is in firm contact with the OE Yamaha pannier rail. I was assured by Exan there would be plenty of clearance. I've emailed them as I'm sure there must be an issue with the manufacture, but just wondered if anyone else has experienced anything similar and found a trick to getting it all lined up? I've slackened off all the clamps and mounts for the mid section of the exhaust, but there's not a lot of wiggle room to be had there. I'll see if I can load some photo's, but if you are familiar with the Exan pipe I think my description will make sense. Basically, I can't get my link pipe or silencer in to the same position Plaides has managed on his. My silencer is way to close to the frame and the strap/hanger would not work, let alone with the supplied hanger bracket for it. Last edited by mb4807; 12-07-14 at 18:24. |

Firstly, check that the link pipe is inserted all the way into the silencer, it’s a tight fit and quite easy not to get fully home.
Secondly, and probably what will help you most, is don’t line things up by the spring loops welded to the link pipe and silencer. If you try and get them in line, the exhaust will only ever be in one position, you won’t be able to adjust anything; the springs work perfectly well when fitted at an angle (and to be truthful they aren’t really need when everything is snugged up). Now rotate the link pipe in the silencer (with everything loosely fitted) anticlockwise looking from the rear of the bike. Every degree you turn the link pipe anticlockwise will result in the link pipe’s exit (and the silencer attached to it) moving outwards and downwards. This, I reckon, will give you the room you’re looking for? Although I mounted my hanger in a different position to that recommended, the silencer is still in exactly the same position as it would be if I did use the pannier frame top mount. You can see from the pictures below that the springs are twisted by maybe 20-25 degrees (as a result of the anticlockwise twisting I mentioned). The second image shows the link pipe’s bends viewed directly along the line of the chainguard, which should give you an idea of routing. What I will add though, is bear in mind that the "X-Black" silencer is shorter and narrower than both the round and oval versions, although the link pipe is the same. |

Still not there
Many thanks for the photos, information and advice. I've had another go, but it's no better. The more I try and the more I look at your photos the more convinced I become that the top bend in my link pipe has not been bent enough to achieve a fitting. As I swing the link pipe anti clockwise, the silencer just starts to point further out and won't clear the pannier rail. If I turn it clockwise, the silencer can just clear the pannier rail, but by that time is touching the top back section of the pannier rail and almost the subframe.
I'm going to request a new link pipe. So for now, back on with the standard pipes, but having just installed the Kev modes, an OTR filter and having removed the snorkel, I think I have enough new stuff to look forward to on my next ride! |

suggestion
I have been advised by the supplier I need to mount a 10mm spacer behind the upper pannier rail to create the clearance. I can't see this working as actually you also have to mount one on the lower mount too to keep it all parallel to the frame, which will then cause the lower pannier rail mount to foul on the plastic shroud/grab rail assembly and will probably require longer bolts too, which are not provided.
I'm not convinced this can ever was designed to work with OE pannier rails. But my investment in rails and boxes is far higher than it is in the exhaust, so I'm not changing those. If I can't get it to fit reasonably easily it'll have to go back as unfit for purpose. Exan themselves assured me it would fit fine. For the benefit of others in the future I will update here with the next instalment. |

Hi
Here is some pictures with my Exan oval and OE panniers, and I use a distance of 10 mm on upper mount, there was no problem with space between frame or panniers when I get all lined up. I mount everything without tightening it so I was able to turn link pipe before thightning everything. Skickat frn min Nexus 7 via Tapatalk |

Spacer
Thank you for the pictures. I can't tell where the spacer is. Is it between the pannier rail and the frame? On the pictures it looks like you have used the spacer on the exhaust hanger stap and the bracket Exan supply. I was told the purpose of the 10mm spacer was for it to be positioned between the frame rail and the frame of the bike so as to move the rail out by 10mm, but I will try your fitting as that in theory will push the silencer further inboard and may create he clearance I need.

I also think that I need to bend out to bracket a little to get clearance from backlight.

Many thanks
Brilliant. I will give it a go at the weekend! Many thanks for the extra photos. That all makes perfect sense now.

All sorted
Many thanks for the input. It was actually easy to fit and line up. Even my springs are in line. The hardest part was forming the hanger strap neatly around the can.
Seems I was just making hard work of it and being thrown off course by some duff information from the supplier about where to use the spacer. Too wet here for a test ride today though. |
