broken dipstick in oil
While changing the oil managed to break the dipstick, leaving half of it in the bottom of the oil reservoir, has anyone got any ideas?
What a dipstick! Cheers Ben |

You could try using a flexible claw pick up tool. Something like this:
![]() Really cheap here I've lost bits and pieces in similarly deep, awkward spaces and used a flexible grab with good success. You will have to be patient, fish around for a while, maybe take a break and come back to it, but you will get it in the end. Drain the oil first so you know roughly where it'll be (in the bottom near the drain hole). You never know, there's a slim chance that the broken bit maybe short enough to find its way out with the old oil? Mind you, if you're going to drain the oil, just unsrew the filter gauze assembly from the bottom of the down tube, remove it and the pipe to the engine. That hole should easily be wide enough for it to fall out.

Thanks for the advice, which filter are you talking about Pleades?
l was in the process of changing the oil , putting bike on the center stand to fill with oil, dipstick somehow got caught in handlebars and snapped, so its quite a big bit, not sure where it is now, will it have dropped all the way down to the drain plug, if it has it will be too big to come out. Look at the bottom of the frame down tube, just below the drain plug and you'll see the nut/union where the rubber oil pipe leaves the bottom of the tank. You will need to remove this. First you will have to take off any bash plate you have fitted.
When you pull it out you will find the gauze strainer on the top of the union. You can give that a clean in petrol while you're at it. With the bottom oil pipe union removed you should be able to get your stray dipstick out. ![]()
