Fuel RON
Hi
What RON fuel is the Tenere able to use, I am planning to go through Russia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia before coming back round to the UK. Has anyone got any experience with different types of fuel being used in the bike as I am hearing that it could be as low as 80 RON in Mongolia. I have spoke to Yamaha UK and they are giving me the party line Having sent them an email they sent this in there reply...... We can advise, that it is recommend that unleaded fuel, with a RON of 95 or higher is used. Further details can be found on page 4-13 within the XT660Z Owners Manual, which can be downloaded from the Services section on our website - So I asked why do you sell it as an adventure bike if you can only use 95 RON and above and can you re-map the fuel This is what they sent me in there second reply....... Having referred the contents of your email to our Technical staff, they have advised, that they are unaware of any separate re-mapping data available from Yamaha, for the XT660Z However, whilst we are aware that this machine has been popular and successful on trips outside of Europe, we are unfortunately unable to comment on the effect, that the use of a lower grade fuel would have On trying to find out for myself I found this on a Yamaha website Prepare for adventure with the XT660Z Tnr - a rugged, functional and stylish dual-purpose bike. It will take you anywhere you desire - from Europe's streets and highways through to the dust and rocks of deepest Africa. At the heart of this tough cross-country explorer is a liquid-cooled, 4-valve, 4-stroke SOHC single-cylinder engine that produces plenty of power across a wide rpm range, allowing you to master just about any riding situation. While its 23-litre fuel tank delivers a good range, the comfortable dual seat, wind-beating rally-raid style nose cowl and high screen take the strain on longer journeys. Ummmmm, deepest Africa....But only if a Tesco/Shell fuel truck follows you so you get the correct fuel !!!!!! I am going to look at a Tenere when I get home in 6 Days in view to buying as it is the bike I would prefer to do this trip on. Thanks in advance Caps |

I think we live in an age of 'protect your a**e'. Yamaha cannot say that the Tenere is probably going to be OK running low octane fuel for fear that:
1. It goes wrong running that fuel for unspecified reason(s) 2. You thrash the guts out of it using 'bad' but available fuel, ruin the engine, then sue them for saying it would be ok using that fuel. I have heard that fuel people can 'cut' good fuel with low octane products to maximise profits, so the chances are we've all had a dose of low octane fuel in our bikes anyway. |

Hahaha well written and yes they just wanna protect their ass as usual. Have a look at some videos by that brilliant nutter who rode round the world several times on a standard R1 and I think that you can use ANY petrol you can get. Maybe I would take a filter/cleaner to keep the fuel clean ish but otherwise have fun!!!!

Having juys ridden my XT660Z from UK to Mongolia through the countries you mention I can state with experience that the majority of fuel stations will be able to supply 92 RON or above. There are only a few in Mongolia where we had to be happy with 80 RON but if you carry a bit of extra fuel in a can you can avoid that and go to the next fuel stop.
We did the Southern route across Mongolia so it may be a different story if doing the Northern route.
