520 v 525 Drive Train - The definitive question !!!
I'm just in the process of preparing the R for it's next BIG Adventure - Darwin - Broome - Alice Springs - Melbourne. During the 30k service it was noted that the chain is developing some dead spots and the sprockets are showing some uneven wear. O/k so we definitely need a new drive kit
BTW .. the existing set up is a 15t JT driving a 48t Supersprox Stealth through a DID VM chain. Now I'm kinda happy with the ratio but have been considering a 47 on the back to offset the l-o-n-g buzzy sections Now research would indicate a range of posts here about sprockets, gearing and chain specifications. The general consensus is that a 525 upgrade is a bit more expensive and slightly heavier but smoother running with a longer life and better reliability. However I'm wondering what anyone who's tried the 525 route can offer as feedback and especially whether they would fit another one At the moment I'd be looking at the OTR 525 kit.

I have that kit and the same gear ratio as u. The kit in my view has three main benefits which are based merely on my own opinion. Stronger,
which means less likely to break and longer wearing. Wider meaning it is less likely to derail. |
