Does the xtz Speedo not contain the immobiliser circuitry that receives the code from the chip in the key?

I dont know, hard to read it from service manual. I does start without it, during the cut fuse was blown, wasnt starting because of that. It ignores clutch / stand switches (what is essentially good thing).

Now I am in process of finding out how to read fuel, rpms and error codes manually. Any help?

No, runs fine without the clocks.

Wow this is interesting. I thought that black box speedo thingy contained something like a chip for the keys and the sensors fuelling etc.
so that big black box is only a digital display. So there must be a chip somewhere right?
The speedo looks terribly fragile because I keep knocking it with the hand guards and costs a small fortune which often worries me. But now I ve learnt it's not necessary is a relief.
Are you planning on installing an analogue speedo etc

The Z runs without a dash. Not so sure it's the case with the R and X though??

The Z's dash doesn't have any diagnostic function, whereas the R/X does, which may or may not do funny things with the ECU if not connected?

Don't know, but I reckon is you should unplug your dash and see if it works without it before you splash out on a Vapor!

will do.... I tossed the XT at about 70/80k on a gravel road while on the DB1k..
broken all the mounting lugs of the speedo unit... still works..
came around a blind corner... there was shut gate... had to head off in to the paddock but high sided on the little ridge between road & padock...
