Single front disc
After cutting the leoVince exhaust into a single can my bike feels transformed by the weight saving. I'm now, like many before me, on a weight saving rampage.
The double front brake has got to go. I tend to mostly use the rear anyway, Anyone got an idea of how much weight could be saved? And which side to get rid? Right now I'm thinking it should be the opposing side to the rear! For no other reason than balance. A Shorai battery is on the list, not sure the long tail is worth the effort, is there anything else I could do to reduce the weight of the bike. Last edited by marques; 16-02-14 at 04:17. |

Hi marques
This has been one of my jobs to do for a while , i was just going to cut and blank of the side of the left can ( looking for back) get rid of the link pipe , leave the right can in place but gut it and use it as a tool tube !! Have you got any close up pics of the finnished job ? Sorry cant help with what weight you'll loose removing the disc but every little helps, can't see why they put twin discs on in the first place !! Phil

Can't really tell from the pic that I posted but the first one is the cap were the pipe was welded. Good job for a fiver. I had the same idea About using the other can for a tool tube but it would have taken a lot more time and I probably would have made a right old mess.

i would like to go single disk too. you can just unbolt the one disk, some one did it on the ADV forum. BUT......because of the hub is designed for two discs, when you take one away.......its looks really weird!!
Also, if you went to one disc would it not be best to upsize the one disc? In a perfect world i would fit new wheels / hubs that use one disc at the front and uses a decent cush drive at the back. but we're talking mega . |

Not worried about the bigger disc, I rarely use the front brake as it is as I find it way to powerful. Certainly intrigued by the weird looks. Know what u mean about the Cush drives, I've cut some rubber mats up, but putting the wheel back on requires clamps.should be easy enough to make my own actually! I've heard that some have had problems with talon hubs.
Love to see the hub with just one disc b4 I start. |

Love what Jaumev did to his 660Z with single disc but having OTRs triple clamp, YZ forks and talon hubs makes it easier. http://traildreamer.com/en/ |

Not sure whether removing one disc, one caliper and one hose is going to make any real world difference in the weight (in any way that you'd notice when riding) as the biggest chunk of unsprung mass on the XTZ is chuffing great hub (and the heavy rim) - which you'd still be stuck with.
I'd also be a tad wary (in the UK anyway) about invalidating insurance - It'll look a bit suspect (and obvious) to insurance assessors (and PC Plod for that matter) that half of your front brake is missing! Not so bad if you do a fork conversion with a single disk, because it looks like it's meant to be that way. I'm not quite sure how you'd fair in the MOT either - with bit of your braking system obviously AWOL? Just playing devil's advocate! I do see where you're coming from. BTW - Nice work on the "Tube Tube"! |
