Breakdown
Fitted some new cush drive rubbers today and took the bike out for a spin.
After about 20 miles, orange warning light came on and moments later bike cut out and coasted to a stop. Trying to restart it was apparent battery had gone flat Tried bumping it but to no avail so called the RAC. It started with a jump lead but within a few minutes engine warning light came on again. RAC guy put a meter across the battery terminals and no charge. Luckily I had been reading on here about the regulator/rectifier connection, so we pull that off for a look. Looked mouldy with a lot of green stuff on the pins. A quick squirt of some contact cleaner and suddenly a charge was evident again at the battery and warning light stayed off. Really chuffed that I had done some reading on here as it meant I was able to ride home as opposed to arriving home on the back of a recovery truck. My question is, will this connector be ok now? Or do I need to have the connector replaced? and if so with an OEM item or something else? Also is it possible to bump start the XT660Z? I couldn't manage it |

Good to see that you put the forum to good use and you got home under your own steam.

If you caught it in the early stages, then cleaning the pins and examining their condition could bring it back to life. However, it is very difficult to get to the pins to clean them properly and even if you do they are likely to be microscopically pitted, which will leave them prone to making poor contact and corroding again. The cheap fix is the "Stoic Bloke mod" splicing in a reg/rec unit from an FZS600 Fazer. You should be able to pick one up off ebay relatively cheaply. Check out this thread... http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?t=17054 Yes it is in theory, but it will not bump if you've got a flat battery and the ECU is flagging up a fault code because it can't detect normal battery voltage (which is what happens when the reg/rec fails). |

Thx Pleiades. Previous owner of the bike was lucky, 10k miles and didn't
have cushdrive or reg/rect probs. I get both in 300 miles |
