XT660R wont start
Hi Guys,
My 2008 XTR refuses to start, I have been systematically disconnecting all the plugs, cleaning the terminals, spraying a bit of WD40 and reconnecting them checking continuity after but so far no luck, I took the small access plug out of the magneto casing to check the timing and when I cranked the engine some oil shot out, should there be oil inside the left hand casing? I haven't had any trouble codes until tonight when it shows 46 on the display which I believe is that it cant measure the voltage to the injection system. The bike started misfiring on friday night in the rain, I fiddled with the HT lead and afterwards it ran fine all the way home. I left it in the garage till monday and it refused to start and hasnt run since. Any help would be much appreciated. |

I think you are yet another victim of the damp weather!
The miss-firing is almost certainly down to moisture in HT side of the ignition. Dry the coil, HT lead and check/replace your plug. The fault code 46 could well be down to the wet as well. It relates to the fuel pump/starter-circuit cut off relay. This is probably the cause of the non-starting. You are doing the right thing checking the connectors, but you are really going to have to take the tank off to investigate properly. Aim your attention at the aforementioned relay and its connectors. Check the wiring harness for abrasion too. It is a reasonably common fault for the wiring to wear through and short against the frame. Worn insulation may not give trouble and go unnoticed until it gets wet, at which point the moisture bridges any gaps between conductor and earth. Also check you battery is fully charged. |

The starter cut-out and fuel pump combined relay is behind the right hand side panel on R/X. It the big one that sits at 45 degrees furthest to the back of the bike next to the frame.

I've put a post on the other non start thread, but what happened to me I was on the motorway and the bike started firing every other lamp post!!! then completely stopped I keeped the throttle open and the motor must have fired every 10 yards which just got me off the motorway were I live pheww!! and then It completely died and I pushed it home, when I got home it would run of sorts but clearly unrideable
This was with 1700 miles on the clock from brand new, never seen a winters day in t's life and you could eat your dinner off it,with no obvious signs checked the old plug it looked good, but put a new plug and it fired and ran perfect I've not had the same experience since my two stroke days. The post I put up about a mate wasn't strictly true it was a shop I know and they phoned me saying that had same with just a few miles and it just wouldn't run,I could offer no help apart from my experience and 10 minutes later they phoned and said it was running perfect with a new plug in,with some expletive's!!!!! |

Success!
Thanks for all the advice, I am very grateful. It turned out the low tension connections to the coil were badly corroded, I took out the coil and cleaned all the terminals. Once they were cleaned it fired up straight away. I am gonna clean up all the connections as most of them were corroded to some extent, 31000 miles in all weathers has taken its toll.
I have a couple of fault codes to clear but I think they are from when I pulled connections with the ignition on. |
