A while ago i was riding home after a days laning and from the back end of my bike i could just hear "KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK"......i real "metal on metal" sound. when i got home i could grab the rear sprocket and move it about an inch! the sprocket carrier bearing had disintegrated!

Well......

on sat on was riding on home, and what did i hear coming from the back of the back...."KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK"!! the same ****in noise.

Its a rhythmic metal on metal sound, if you pull the clutch in the sound stops - so its only when its under drive.

When i grabbed the sprocket....no movement!
so i grabbed the back wheel.....no momement!
swing arm?....no movement!

i put her on the center stand and into first, gave her some throttle.....no noise. i did notice how unbalanced my Army special tyre is though and the rear sprocket had a very slight fluctuation.

i dropped the revs down, put her into second gear and opened her up....."KKKKKKKKKKKKK" coming from the back wheel area. (also nearly fell off the center stand!)

Just very quickly dropped the wheel out....all looks fine? i know my cush drive is ****ed so am ordering a new one from Wemoto. i know my chain is ****ed and will be getting one soon-ish (i don't want to put a new chain on in the winter )

More investigation needed....any thoughts?

What with fcuked chain and cushes the chain was slapping on the underside of the swing arm wearing the placy slider away and finnaly eating the ally

Worth a look mate , i didn't find it till i got the black pig on that stand of mine

Hope it isn't that mate , i was lucky and got a second hand one from Italy for �150

+1. I reckon Phil (the one in France that is!) may quite well be on to something. The clue is perhaps in this sentence...

With the clutch in (no drive) all the chain slack will be on the top run, with drive engaged all the slack will be on the bottom. If the plastic chain slider has worn through on the underside, when the chain is slack on the bottom run it'll be slapping rhythmically against the swing arm - metal on metal.

If you've got a combo of knackered OE shock, chain, cush rubbers then the lower front part of the plastic slider will take a real hammering (and ultimately the swingarm). Add to that a 14T sprocket (maybe lowering links?) and a heavy load, and the effects will be compounded even further.

Take a look. It might not be the problem, but if it is and you catch it early, all you'll need is the new plastic protector for the swingarm.

Had another quick look at the bike today. (struggling for time at the mo)

Dropped the front sprocket cover off, grabbed a touch and had a gander at the the chain slider..........all seems fine.

So far the only thing I've noticed is my brake pads are very low!

i also just remembered that when i changed the sprocket carrier barrier (which was prob no more than 1k ago) i also changed both wheel bearings at the same time.

Im going to put it all back together with my new cush drive rubbers and see if its still making the noise. If it is......it has to be the rear bearings?!?! I'm 99% sure the noise was coming from the wheel / sprocket area.

P.S can any one recommend me some rear pads? and don't say the Enduro EBC ones (the red ones)...as that's what i have now and are pants!

Could be the chain. Go over I slowly by hand looking for a seized roller. Old chain made quite a bit of noise on mine, didn't realize just how much until I fitted a new one. Take wheel off and then bearings by hand. Might be no play in the but one could have seized up and in screaming.
