Handguards increasing buffeting?

I've searched the forum but no matches so:
I've recently fitted a pair of Yamaha handguards and spoilers (rebranded Acerbis Rally Pro I believe) to my XTR and I now have much more wind buffeting around my helmet. When I bought the bike, I was impressed by how little buffeting there was from the tall Yamaha screen but I've now made it worse. Has anyone else had this experience? I certainly didn't expect this.

I most certainly would not have expected that to happen either. Mind you I have always used Barkbusters. Bizarre, can you take the plastics off easy enough without having disassemble everything? Might be worth a try to see if it happens consistently??

Not surprised in the least it's why companies spend so much in wind tunnels tall screens are notoriously finicky, over the years I've had the same problem on several bikes and do at the moment where I have gone from Arai Corsair to an RX7GP they look identical and yet their a world away from each other, nothing has changed in my situation except the helmet.

Take the spoilers off and go from there in the end it's down to priorities of what you want.

More just as an insight as to what is going on do you have a tankbag if you do and fit it,fill it full of newspaper I bet it cures the problem because it'll stop the wind swirling behind the screen.

Thank you both for your replies. I assumed, wrongly, that handguards on such wide bars would be sufficiently far away from my head to make little difference. But, you're right; without seeing the airflow, who knows what's going on. I'll play about with the spoilers although as my only reason for fitting handguards was to reduce wind chill on the hands, I may have to live with the buffeting. I don't have a tankbag (yet) but that's something I shall also try. Cheers.

Not that you'll have loads of options with the XT as it'll either be on or off with bits you have added, but it can get mighty complicated when you have bike with several screen options, when your riding the bike find a decent piece of road go for a fixed speed and then when riding along feel for the wind with your left hand and where it is coming from even directly above and behind your head.

I say that because I've had screens that work well for me but bad for my wife and it takes some sorting.

Thanks guys. I've been down the screen replacement route before with other bikes and always ended up reverting to the standard screen. This bike came with the taller screen and it did seem to be effective, although less pleasing to the eye, before I fitted the handguards. However, as you say, sounds like I need to experiment.

Get some cardboard, gaffer tape and cable ties and experiment with different spoilers, screen heights etc. Find what works before you spend any money. Everybody is a different shape/size and adopts a slightly different riding position, so experimentation is always the best way to find the best solution for you.
