Advice for installing lower steering bearing
Hi.
I'm in trouble now, already two times trying to install lower steering bearing - first time it go on 3mm - second time 4mm. Procedure - bearing to the oven 200 Celsius and stem to the fridge -25 Celsius. What i'm doing wrong - it's getting really PITA! Have anybody managed to do this at home? |

I've tried heating it before, but you can't heat it enough and handle it quickly enough to get it to just drop on nicely. I suggest the following:
- Take the old bearing inner race. - Break the cage so all the rollers fall off (assuming you've not already done so in taking it off) - Put a slit in it with a dremel/hacksaw/whatever - This will stop it getting stuck (again, I do this in order to get it off in the first place) - Drop the new bearing on, then put the old inner race upside down on top of it (thin ends together) - Find a bit of tube which fits over the steering stem and sits on the old inner race, and is longer than the steering stem. - Apply big hammer to end of tube... Using the old inner race should mean you can't damage the bearing.

It took 3.5 ton to press my new bearing on...
only 2.5 to get the old one off... Yer don't cut the old bearing off... You push the stem out of the yoke , bearing comes with it.. Then push the stem back into the yoke.. Press the new bearing on... Push the steem from the top "threaded end" Steems have a lip on the bottom so can ONLY be pushed out from the top & pushs the bearing off at the same time... 10 minute job....

Yep, done mine at home with no fancy tools or trickery. Just put it on with a smear of grease and banged it home with a hammer and punch on the inner race being careful not to hit the rollers. It's been good for 15,000 miles so far.

Never had any trouble at home replacing the lower bearings using the "pipe and hammer" method (as above) and never needed with heat. Just make sure the tube/pipe drives on the inner race and not the cage or rollers as uberthumper states (never though of using a slotted old race before).

Big thnx
I used uberthumper method - works great. I was thinking when i bake bearing and put stem in fridge, then it fall in place right away ( well... i was wrong, this method wouldnt work here. |
