Highlands and Islands

The plan was to meet Tim on route as I headed north, best get a flying start (Duxford Air Museum).

Running behind schedule, more speed needed (RAF Wittering).

First stop, Holy Island of Lindisfarne. Tides were timed perfectly for us to cross the causeway.

We caught the ferry from Scrabster (North Scotland) to Stromness (Orkney), staying there for 3 days. More neolithic ruins, tombs, standing stones than you can shake a stick at, plus a decent brewery (well worth a visit) and some spectacular cliffs and coastline to explore.

(spot the bikes on top of the cliffs)

I should have replaced my chain before I left home. It was beginning to look pretty sorry for itself. Fortunately Dr Ds Bike Surgery were able to provide a new one.

My Garmin GPS also started to fail. Not sure how I ended up here!

Shipwrecks off alongside the Churchill Barriers.

Back to the mainland and a quick visit to John o'Groats (and the real most northerly point at Dunnit Head).

Smoo cave near Durness contains an impressive waterfall.

Great scenery along the north coast of Scotland.

We caught the ferry from Ullapool (North West Scotland) to Stromness (Lewis, Hebrides) staying there for 2 days.

Found a bridge that goes nowhere towards the north of the island. The tarmac stops, gravel track begins, but soon turns too difficult for me! Tim explored a bit further on his KTM 690 Enduro, but also turned back.

So we went to play on the beach instead. I should have known better!

Heading South to Harris. The Roads were more interesting and the beaches spectacular.

Final ferry ride from Harris to Skye. Looks like we will have a smooth crossing :-)

Last few photo opportunities in the highlands.

10 days. Great roads. Good weather (not a drop of rain). Lots of history and scenery.

Now, where to next?
