it works!

Being unwilling (and unable) to fork out ~5/600 beer tokens for a bike-specific satnav, I bought a waterproof case off ebay (similar to the one linked above) and a secondhand RAM mount, and used my ancient car-type Tomtom GO720. It works well. I can do without the voice prompts, and the cost of the installation was about �30 over and above the satnav I already owned.

What do I think? I think it's a good solution, for a very reasonable cost. Good post.

I had one of those cases for my Garmin nuvi 50...
cant see the screen if the sun is at the wrong angle..
Cut the clear plastic out.. worked great...
just no longer rain proof..

Not rainproof wouldn't work for Wales, any time of year

I found the same problem, but it was just as bad with the unit out of the waterproof case. The screen brightness of a car type unit just isn't enough for use out of the shade of the car interior. I found angling the unit back so that the screen was facing my chest/stomach gave the best results. Worst place of all was in a tank bag facing the sky. A decent mount should give you enough options for a readable screen.

I went around the same dilemma myself and couldn't justify the price of the waterproof satnav. After a bit of messing about this is what I did:

Wired a USB 12v charger to my battery.
Bought a basic holder off fleabay for about �20. It's pretty good even in torrential rain but it ain't water tight.
Downloaded navfree for road riding and memorymap for trails to my android phone. Total was around �10 including some OS map downloads.

All in, it was under �50 and it keeps my phone charged while I'm out and about...

Although, I am presently messing about with it. Siliconed up a Tupperware box so that I can charge a gopro out and about and swopping the basic case for a modified drybag to keep the phone water tight. Happy to post some pics and links if anyone is interested.

An update.

Sent the case and mount back for a refund - unable to use gps buttons thru the screen and the mounting of the case to the mount is very suspect - avoid!!!

Went for this instead.

I use an old tomtom car unit in a cheap ebay case, waterproof usb socket and a lanyard in case it drops off for road use. A Garmin hand held walking unit on a ram mount with topo maps for trails and find they cover all the bases for about �130. They are also easily transferred between the three bikes I use them on. Cheap...me...you bet.
