Building a wheel

Who's built their own wheel before, coz I need some advice...
Ok, so I'm planning on putting an 18" wheel on the rear. I see that from OTR's site they go with a 18"x2.5" rim. They also use a talon crush drive rear hub, but after scouring some KTM forums people seem to think that they are pretty ****e due to the design.

Insted they upgrade to a Rad hub:
http://www.radmfg.com/Cush-Series-RE...radh-eq-1r.htm
Ive looked on Rad's site and they dont make a hub to suit the tenere, so i think I need to use one from another bike. Does anyone know what other bike's hub will fit? What hub does the OTR wheel use, is it a ktm?

Also, whats a good choise of rim. Strength is probably the main priority, due to the weight of the bike. I will try and loose some of the weight buy running TU Bliss

And are there any sort/brand of spokes that I should use?

Hope yous can help!
Cheers,
Tim.

Central Wheel Components (link) for all things wheel-related. I have found them helpful and knowledgeable, if not the quickest.

Worth noting that they appear to be talking about 950SE's, which are slightly more powerful than the Tenere.

I will be receiving a rear wheel from Talon in the next week or so. By the end of July I should have put over 10,000 miles on it, half of that on dirt. I'll let you know how it goes.

I think they are based around Talon's hub design for the LC4 (6x0cc) KTM's but with different spacers and rim offset.

BTW, you can buy a Talon rear from OTR for 980 Euro, or you could just buy it from Talon themselves right here in the UK for about 550. Ok so OTR include the disc and sprocket, which narrows the price a bit, but still...

is that a whole wheel? (rim, spokes, hub - just stating what a whole wheel is )

are Talon hubs meant to be problematic then? i thought they were the Rolls Royce of hubs.

Yes. Exactly what OTR are selling, minus the disc and sprocket.

The disc and sprocket are KTM EXC pattern, and probably about 50-60 to buy separately.

I had no particular concerns about giving my money to Talon based on their reputation, and I'm still not really concerned having read the thread on the link posted, because it seems to relate entirely to 9x0 twins.

The Talon cush-drive setup is the de facto standard for Dakar. JMo had exactly the same rear wheel I am ordering and did the Heroes-Legend.

It may turn out that Talon have made a mistake and not beefed the design up enough for the 100+bhp twins - no conclusions seem to have been aired on that thread, so presumably they're still engaged in private discussion with the people they've sold wheels to.

However for a <50bhp single, I'm not worried. I've still ordered a spare set of rubbers (as well as bearings and seals) to take with me to the US though

I have a Talon hub in my extra rear wheel for the 690. I do not like the design of the rubbers exposed to dust and moist. You have to grease them but I like to keep them dry to prevent dust glue-ing to it and making sandpaper. I prefer the KTM design which is more like our Tenere hub.

I tried Tubeless but I do not like it. At home (sand mut but no stones) it works fine. But at rally speeds in Marocco both front and rear started leaking.

Can anyone here confirm this? Cause in that case, there should be several options for using either a ktm cush hub or other aftermarket hubs.

I really like the Haan wheels hub and the advantage is that they use the same rubbers as ktm.

Well the Talon hub takes a KTM sprocket and disc, and it's designed for something narrower than the Ten because it's built with a big offset to get the sprocket in line then a spacer to put the disc in the right place. So what else?

More conclusively, which I forgot in my last post, Stoic_Bloke of this forum actually has a stock LC4 wheel in his bike. It doesn't run in line with the front, he said he's got used to it, but obviously building one with the right offset would be better.
