Unhappy xt660x knocking sound

hi all,
i am new here to this forum and i am after some advice i have a Yamaha xt660x 2009 and i have a clunk noise/ clicking noise to it i thought it sounded like the big end (only done 10,500 miles) ive had some people listen to it and the best option so far is it could be the balance shaft that's come loose (only just bought biker form private seller ) went for a ride of 200 miles after the first 100 this noise appeared and i want to get to the bottom of what it is soooooooo .... my questions are
is this a common problem with this clunky tick over sound coming from round the crankshaft ?

and does anybody have any information on how to get to the ballancer shaft to check its all ok ? e.g diagrams step to step guide what cover i need to remove to reach it (i do have mechanical experience fully trained bike mechanic but im not used to stripping down bike engines) thanks for reading and any help given i thank you in advance (sorry if i have posted this in the wrong place or anything im pretty new to forums)

thanks in advance, ashley!!!

Hi prob no help to you but i habe been in a similar situation with my last xtx took it to a garage and turned out to be a snapped woodruff key.

That was an 08xtx 18500 miles they suspected big end issues before they stripped it down.

The guru kev should be along shortly to explain what it does as im not the mechanicly minded type sorry

It started with a knocking on the bottom end and lower brake side with not to much from the gear side more sounded like a canal barge and was constant knocking at all revs.

Sorry carnt be more help

Hi there bikemad195, thank you for joining our forum and also thanks for joining the XT Supporters, straight away.

First of all, now that you are an XT Supporter, I have sent you a private message with a link to the concise official Yamaha workshop manual, its over 460 pages where you can see the complete exploded diagram of the whole bike, chassis engine and every other part. Have a look through that to start with, then please continue this discussion in private with Kev, send him a private message and he will give you full instructions on how to inspect the causes of the noise you are having.

This section of the forum where you posted your enquiry is the "Welcome area" for new members to introduce themselves to the rest of the members, whereas technical issues like the one you are enquiring about are discussed into further details in the sub sections further down from this area.

So I will now move this thread there and I will leave a link for you to reach it for the next 2 days.

But as I've said go and ask Kev how to proceed and he will assist you as much as he can.

meantime, from me:

and to

Welcome aboard Ashley. Sorry your having troubles with your new bike.

Could it be a loose or incorrectly torqued crank nut? The crank journal can slip on the bearing race if the nut is not tight and correctly torqued causing premature wear, excessive play and knocking. A few have been known to work loose.

Hope you get toe the bottom (end) of it soon!
