Nitro X
Hi All,
Has anyone fitted a Nitro X power commander. I am thinking of getting one to see if I can get rid of the popping back in the exhaust after fitting cored pipes. The AIS blocking did not work on my 2004 XTX. Any views please. |

HI,
I like some popping but this is like 10 shotguns going off as soon as I close my throttle.you might be able to hear it in Norwich LOL. I think it could be because I have shortened my pipes,so I am experimenting with different shapes and lengths of decibel killer at the moment. Cheers for your replies, Croxalla. |

Hi croxalla,
Yes, I fitted the Nitro-X module to my XTX, and thanks to Pleiades for posting up a link to my old thread so promptly I don't think any of the fuelling mods will fix the popping you are getting, they're there to fix the fuelling issues, not the popping. Mine pops a little on the overrun or decelerating on light throttle openings, but I don't mind it doing that, does no harm and it sounds good anyway! But as far as fuelling mods go, I definitely wouldn't recommend the Nitro-X. Don't believe the bullsh$t in the sales blurb, it's written to make people think it's a "Power Commander" but it's nothing of the sort - it's just a resistor network. The bullsh$t about "programming" just refers to setting the DIP switches. The Nitro-X is wired into the ECU instead of the IAT sensor (inlet air temp) to fool the ECU into enrichening the mixture. And therein lies the main disadvantage of the Nitro-X; once it's set, it ONLY works for one given ambient temperature, unless you're going to adjust it every day! Your best bet by far is to fit a Kev Mod. That allows you to just dial in your desired enrichment and because the IAT is retained, it will take care of the daily ambient temperature changes automatically. If you haven't already bought a Nitro-X, then my advice is DON'T. If you have, then sorry, but chuck it in the bin and buy a Kev Mod!! Cheers, Dave. Last edited by DaveR; 13-01-13 at 13:18. |

2004 to 2006 ECU's have twin spark ignition systems for emission control, the ignition fires every 360 crank shaft degrees to burn off the hydrocarbons left over from the power stroke. This second ignition sparks when the exhaust valve is open & will light up the unburnt fuel this is where your popping comes from, by blocking off the AIS you are stopping fresh air from entering the exhaust header this helps reducing the popping but won't stop it completely. Make sure you Co is not adjusted over 20 this will help with reducing the popping back.
From 2007 to present the ECU is a single spark ignition where the ignition fires every 720 degrees, it only fires on the power stroke. When you block the AIS there is no fresh entering the exhaust header * there is no spark to light up any unburnt fuel, 2007> onwards the popping is reduced by 99% by blocking the AIS pipe.

I don't think you'll ever cure it totally. From what I can recall blocking the AIS on early XT motors won't stop the popping back, it will only reduce it somewhat. A blocked AIS has a much greater effect on later bikes with the O2 sensor.
