Hello all!

I was in for a suprise The other day when I was going to connect a battery charger indicator/connector on my bike.... lifted the seat, only to find the someone had stolen my battery!!!

quickly ran in to the house...looked up my manual... and behold!! on the xt660za the battery is move to the very convenient place....UNDER THE TANK!
what about if one would be in need of starterhelp....

anyone around here that have had any experience with getting access to the battery on the abs version please let me have some info...please

Best regards n011an

I believe there are two remote terminals specifically for charging the battery behind the the right (might be left?) hand grey plastic tank cover, whether they would be any good for a jump start I wouldn't know, but they do go direct to the battery. The battery is different on the ABS bike, being a VLRA type it requires a different kind of charger that compensates for ambient temperature.

Thanks for Youre reply pleiades!

I found 1 access point with the 30Amp mainfuses on the left side " forktunnel" (front of the tank).

after a tight fit I finally got my chargerplug fitted...haven't connected the charger yet, I have the Optimate3 but still have my doubts if it is ok to use?

Best regards n011an

Optimate say that their chargers work with VRLA batteries, Yamaha say/imply they shouldn't be used? The S10 has a VRLA battery and I noticed comes with a warning sticker saying only use a constant voltage charger. I suspect it might be a ploy by Yamaha to get you to go to the dealer more regularly?

Your best bet is to contact Optimate and get a definitive answer.

I am reviving an old thread as I have exactly the same problem.

Has anyone else had success in charging the XT660ZA battery without moving the tank?

This person seems to (my Danish is not perfect) have accessed the battery by partly removing the tank, but Pleiades statement in this thread seems much more attractive to me. http://www.tenere.dk/forumnew/forum_posts.asp?TID=6488

I am not very close to my bike right now, so I will happily take suggestions. If someone wants to share their results, that’d be great!

Yes that is my thread :-)

I wanted to connect some accories directly to the battery, and basically
  • Removed the two bolts by the rear of the tank
  • Remove the grey side plastic (8 bolts)
  • Remove the grey fairing parts (4 bolts)
  • Remove black plastic below the tank (6 bolts)
  • Remove the 2 big bolts ons the side below the tank that fixates the tank to the frame (and takes the side load of crashes)
  • Remove the CDI connection cables

Then i could move the tank enough backwords to remove the plastic arround the lock and access the battery terminals - but not enough to remove the battery

If just for charging i would also use the other points, but i have also fitted a socked for a charger below the seat.

There is a connection on left frontside of tank. I have attach a Ctek charger cable to that point and have no problem to charge my battery.

If someone is interested I can tell that this connection on front of tank is not direct to battery. There is no power on it when you run starter. I know that after I try to connect a Scottoiler to this, and all works OK I start engine and my Scottoiler was reseted.
