Ok, a bit of a quick curly one here (couldn't see it covered anywhere in older threads). I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on the best GPS option to cover both street & track coverage in Oz, but which could also be used overseas. We're off on an international family holiday (Europe & possibly Canada) shortly, and I would love to covertly add a piece of kit like this to my bike setup

Before I bought it I saw it demo-ed with ozmaps as an underlay. I have always been meaning to get the oz maps topo mini SD but haven't yet.

The original garmin ram mount in my humble opinion is a piece of manure that should be tossed into spare parts bin asap. If you go the zumo route buy a Touratech mount they seem to be the only thing that stops the interface pins from permanently stuffing up every 5000km.

The other one I use a fair bit but it isn't water proof is VMS 700 gps in the fire truck which is a great bit of kit. Huge screen. And it gets shaken to extremes in the big red truck so I recon it would last on a bike. I haven't seen any sort of bike mount for these.

The way things are going with i-pads and such, the next one I will buy is something like a i-pad with a usb dongle. Some of the mapping GPS gear you can buy for a i-pad is pretty good. And a really big screen is great especially if your like me (short sighted and slow retinal response) and it takes a bit to re focus from the road ahead to a display...

I use a cheapo 5" Garmin nuve 50 with topo maps..

not a good pic..but these fully inclosed cases work well.
semi water proof.. I have dunked it a couple of rivers..
and it still works...theres a foam pad in them helps with the vibration..
touch screen still works though the clear cover..
yer will fined the cases on e-bay..

Hmmm, some good responses here. Zumo, mounted with the Touratec lockable thingy, sounds good but pricey.

How would these options go with also being used handheld, whilst walking around as a dumb tourist in Europe/Canada? Obviously, I suppose I'd have to download maps, but any other concerns?

I use an Magellan Explorist XL and it is water proof, it can run on power from my bike or on AA batteries if I want to walk around.

Maps are available on SD cards for most countries or you could download them.

This unit is robust and reliable, they may be old but they work.

Well, my hand was forced faster than I would've liked but I've rushed out & got a GPS. I was looking closely at the eXplorist 510, as well as the Garmin Etrex 30. Ended up pulling the trigger on the Garmin. Fingers crossed I made the right decision.
