Bad Engine Knocking

Hi Guys,

I have a new Tenere 660 (xt660z) and at approx 600km on the clock i noticed it has now developed a loud 'Jackhammer' type knocking under load. It occurs at pretty much any rpms, so its not prone to just low rpm and lugging it (although it sounds similar to 'big end' knocking) it can happen even at 4-4,500 rpm and simply opening the throttle will induce this sound/sensation. To me it doesn't sound right and it wasn't apparent in the first 600 km of use. I initially thought it might be fuel problem/pre-detonation problem, so i re-fuelled and still the problem is there. i always use 98 octane. It doesn't make the 'jackhammer' knocking sounds when idling or just coasting along or even down a hill with closed throttle, even if the rpms are highish, Its only under load and its very loud and knock like. Any idea's? Need help.

I reckon with just 600Km on it, you aught to be asking your dealer this question! Sounds to me like it's a big end or main bearing, but at 600Km, that's bad.

I would rev the crap out of the engine to make it worse then take it back to dealers and get new engine....just as long as it still under warranty

HI it sounds like the dreaded nut at the drive side(rh) of the crank has come loose.

yep warranty all the way!. tho make sure any mods or changes, exhaust, pcv, oil level is correct before giving them a shout

+1. But at only 600km? Holy cr*p!!! Is it an ex-demo bike by any chance?

Excluding errors in assembly, the primary drive crank nut can only become loose through wear in the main bearing/plate washer/primary gears. It can only come undone if no lock washer was fitted.

For your info, I had a similar problem at 60,000 miles (18 months-ish) that was rectified under warranty (new main bearing, crankshaft, piston etc).

Do keep us posted as to the outcome........

Guys i dont really have a definitive answer yet. After 3 people riding it, all seem to say it sounds normal and rides fine (im not convinced) but ive logged it with them, they are aware of the issue that i have raised so if something happens down the track no one can blame me for it. I might take it elsewhere for another opinion. Will keep you all posted.
