Eil, Caggan, Carrbridge, Loch Garten and a military road

A stunning day for a change. We found a track on the map and had a look.
Couldn't get all the way along as we came across a chained and locked gate.

And just to compare shots of the same place - different time of year

Nice photos again lads.

Bringing on a bit of deja vu? I'm sure I recall riding some of that route on an an MTB earlier this year (The section we rode was: Gleanann - Geal-charn Mor - alongside River Dulnain - Caggan - Eil - Wade's Road -Sluggan Bridge - Carrbridge). I spent a week circumnavigating(ish) the Cairngorms starting and ending from my parents' place between Kirriemuir and Cortachy. I seem to remember my old man boring me to tears with the history of Wade's military road at the time; correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't a lot of the A93/A939 built on the same military road?

Yep the route followed the Dulnain. The wooden bridge in the photos is only about 1 mile West of Sluggan. The A93 and A939 are only a small part of the network of roads built in the 18th century to move troops from fort to fort much like the Roman roads in England. Much of the modern roads have been built over these roads, but some survive and are usually on private or forestry land. A digitised copy of the original Roy map of these roads is held by the National library of Scotland.
