clack when shifting into 3rd gear

At 0:22 of the below video you can hear what I mean

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtcNKdQdoBg

Many people have reported the same, on Tnrs as well as on Rs (we don't have the X here). Is it something to worry about ? My bike is brand new, by the way.

Seing the video, that clack brought a sense of familiarity I must say!
Hopefully someone can tell us if it's anything to worry about. Damn you for bringing it up, now I'll be listening for it every time I'm out driving

Took mine for a ride today...32c sunny so I thought I'd profit from it...

I paid attention to my gear change to find that it was not as noisy as I had remembered...

This might have something to do with the fact I now run 10w50 fully synthetic oil in the engine??

Hey guys mine was EXACTLY the same from new and I notified the dealer as I thought that we would need a gearbox strip. Mine was a noisy 4th gear. Anyway after about 5000 km the noise went away and Martin told me that often they need to be run in and that so far they have NEVER had to strip a gear box on a 660, neither MT03 nor XTs.

So dont worry you should be ok!!!

I'm just back in from another ride out...I paid special attention this time...yip there's a slight clunk but not that noticeable...my moto has 5000kms on it so I think it'll lessen as you put more klicks on it...maybe an oil change will assist at the same time?

Heard the noise but with-out riding it hard to diagnose...my xt660x has a third gear issue but mine is jumping out of gear under load, gearbox now apart and the 3rd gear pinion meshing with 4th gear pinion is worn but to replace the gears from yamaha australia is about

Good that you bring this up, i've come across quite a few reports of trouble with the third gear, even in some cases it breaking and causing massive damage. The french Motomagazine reported just such a problem during their 50000 km test of a XTX. It has been suggested this could be caused by shifting into 3rd at too low speed and then throttling up hard. I hope the clack noise isn't related to this, but could it be a warning sign ? Not likely in my case anyway, since I'm old and rather slow.

hi for this third gear issue take a look at my gearbox thread i had contacted KEV about..this is what happens when you change up gear with-out using the clutch,im lucky it never broke up inside or it could of been a nasty mess, but to repair this im looking at over $1000 AUS (parts are a lot cheaper in uk) and i will fix it myself and for that money ive found a second hand engine..so another engine is going in

It broke inside to two guys here in the forum, a total mess. One of their mechanics advised to beware of stressing the third gear. I don't have access priviledges, unfortunately.
