Servicing Questions

Hi guys, a couple of quick questions regarding my recent 6000 mile/6 month service(bearing in mind I've yet to top 2600 miles yet) :
(Total cost was 164.That about right?)

1. I fitted a centre stand myself (Yammy one) and the because the chain roller bolt is replaced by the bolt the left spring goes on, it states in the instructions to be tightened at 63nm. Now the mechanic who serviced bike said he`d never torque a bolt that tightly, probably only up to 30nm!? Now I've hand tightened it with socket ratchet(a b***** to even get that in behind the bolt) and it spins freely(i had actually overtightened it previously), but I`m worried about it coming off etc as I`m flying along. Surely Yamaha can`t be that wrong or am I reading it wrong off diagram? I couldn't even get a torque wrench in that space even if I wanted to its that small a gap.

2. Another chain adjustment question : Service manual says do it on side stand, but along with others on here and other advice, mechanic told me to sit on the bike and adjust it by hand tension(ie ignore the accurate measurements stated in manual and just do it by `sight` and `feel`) - I had wanted him to show me the correct way of doing it btw.

Farkling the bike I can do myself, but anything to do with drive train I`m paranoid and wanted to make sure that everything sounded right?

3. Unrelated, but my spokes after only 2500 miles are rusted to death. Has anyone got any joy from a Yamaha warranty claim as this is crazy. I know they are poor and its a common problem but they are bad, even after coating the whole lot in ACF-50 with a brush. If so, what is the process as my warranty runs out in June this year

Anyway, thanks for any tips and pointers

I had new spokes fitted to my XT1200 under warranty, infact they fitted the stainless ones I supplied. Don't ask them tell them.

If you are worried about the bolt working lose then just put a bit of loctite on the thread. Chain adjusting is a bit of a guess with me too!

(Total cost was 164.That about right?) Dealers costs, what can you do

Surely Yamaha can`t be that wrong or am I reading it wrong off diagram? I couldn't even get a torque wrench in that space even if I wanted to its that small a gap. If it's a 8mm bolt 30nm sounds about right. the only 63nm i can see in the manual is the sidestand mount it's a 10mm

Personally I lay over the seat to compress the suspension 'mid way', the chain will be at its tightest, allow about 15-20mm slack

Farkling the bike I can do myself, but anything to do with drive train I`m paranoid and wanted to make sure that everything sounded right?

I got bored one day and sanded and carefully painted mine, talk about losing your will to..........

http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?...t=centre+stand

(at the bottom, a scan of instructions)

I`m an idiot... its not the M8 bolt thats 62nm its the M10 nut on the actual stand. I mis -read the instructions. Whoops...no wonder the mechanic looked at me like a was a total nubbin

Oh well I`m always learning..

So I take the claim through the dealer? I`ll enquire. I suppose its my word that I`ve kept them clean and covered etc.. i`ll give it a bash though, as its unreasonable that they are like that after only 2500 miles.

change to stainless spokes then you can forget about them forever

regardless of tightening specs you should use loctite,

red for permanent fitting parts that you take of very rarely and are a steel to steel fitment...when you need to get it undone heat it up first, i use a small flame type soldering gun - breaking strain is approx 160 ft/lbs (from memory) and boiling point of 150 deg C

blue for less permanent fittings and/or steel to aluminum - breaking strain of approx 60 ft/lbs (again from memory) and a boiling point of 150 deg C again but doesn't need heating to break free

bolts that you want to make sure don't come out but can't get to them easily use GREEN, its a wicking fluid so it will follow the threads and set, holds like red but breaks free like blue

Use your manual, it is well written, take it step by step, as a former motorcycle shop owner it is good and on the XT virtually everything can be done at home with a little patience and the right tools

So...you lay over the seat and while doing this messure the chain? do you pull the chain up towards you then since your lay over the seat?
