Romania
Just finished reading a copy of Bram Stokers Dracula,
and that got me to thinking (very dangerous), and that got me to google earth, and that got me to Bran's Castle in Transylvania, and that got me to a spare week in mid June, and that got me to ask the question? Has anyone ridden the Transylvanian Alps?

Went through that part of Romania twice on route to the Black Sea, once in 1988 (CX500 maggot!) and once in 2008 (GSA).
The Transylvanian Alps are stunning and there are some great roads to ride both on and off the tarmac. In 1988 it was very quiet, just tractors, the odd Trabant, goat or Russian flat twin outfit and the roads were poorly surfaced in parts. Food was crap then (tough stringy chicken and watery soup), but everything was cheap as chips, including beer! Its a bit more pricey now, but not excessively so and there's a hell of a lot more traffic about. The area is very much more touristy; full of hikers, extreme sports dudes and cyclists as well as an increasing amount of (mainly German and Czech) Ewan McCharleys on GSs (I know that's a bit hypocritical of me! ). The Transfagarasan Highway (Google it) is a great ride these days, much better surfaced and crosses right through the highest point in Romania. I suppose its a bit like the Road of Bones in that it was built as a military road by the Russians (mainly political prisoners) to get tanks through to the west. Its often closed from November to early spring due to the snow. There are spectacular bridges, hairpins and steep drops, great scenery and some timeless villages. The people are pretty friendly too. I'd thoroughly recommend it for a short haul adventure. Oh, and I never saw a vampire so no garlic or crucifixes required! |
