pics of my badly SMASHED xtr, ready to have a major makeover...

Hi Guys,
I havent posted for some time but I just scored a 2010 xt660r.
it came from a damaged auction and was the worst looking bike out of a hundred or so. its quite bad!

My plan is to transform the bike into one bad ass motherplucker of an xtr!

anyway I love a challenge and will have to replace the front end and the rear end, and the plastics, ooh, and the tank, um and the bars, mirrors, headlight, rear frame section & taillight assembly, possibly the swingarm, radiator, bars, maybe some switches... well lets call it everything except the engine & dash and maybe the rear wheel as they look pretty good. It actually has a set of beowulf cans! hope they arent smashed too...

so its a budget build, again! hahaha, suck eggs you blokes with wads of cash to throw at brand new fancy ohlins suspension and aftermarket pipes! This will be a budget build with a difference.

So what do I have to start off with (except one very badly smashed xt)?

I have a few spares including:
kawasaki 3 spoke alloy rims from a 'balius' 250. front wheel has a nice big single disc, rear has a 180 battlax and a single disc. nice looking rims.

forks and triples from a zx250 balius (same as the rims). I may have to fit fork extenders if I were to use these forks, but I dunno, they look a little thin and I want fat! other forks I have are from a suzuki dr400 or a suzuki GSXR1000 2001. but no triples for either.

I have a ducati 998 monster radiator and fans (I may run 2 fans).

the rear end may be a hybrid (out of whats not too damaged) from the xt and a yammy R1 rear with clear LED lights.

I may use the kawasaki balius alloy swingarm, or find another alloy one in place of the crappy looking steel one, that may be damaged anyway.

bars will be renthal fatbars, more than likely with risers.

I may fit 2x projector HID's, but Im unsure of this.

the tank I hope to have repaired so it suits the seat and plastics but i wont know about this till i pick up the bike on Monday.

so any help in regard to replacement parts would be most helpful. (eg fitting KTM tank & plastics to it, the DR forks with triples? whatever! I dont mind swapping and changing things as long as they are an improvement on the original!

I'll update with some better pics as soon as I pick up the bike on Monday, and keep you guys informed on the progress...
cheers guys!

thanks guys. I picked up a pair of yz250 46mm USD forks and clamps for it today. all I have to do is help the guy fit an engine to his subaru for a day. good score! it didnt come with a caliper so Im hoping the std xt one will fit. I dont pick up the bike till monday but will hook straight into it for sure! will keep you guys posted with heaps of pics and low cost mods.

I hope the yz forks will be ok. they dont have a provision for the steering lock but ill find a way around that and they do look quite long. Ill post some questions at a later date about fork length etc so I can get an idea of the overall geometry of the forks on the bike. just hope the frame isnt bent.

its hard when you buy at an online auction and theres ****** all decent pics to go from...

cheers guys, Picked her up today.
she doesnt look as bad as in the pics. the frame looks ok, even triples look good.
theres alot of gear Ill have to replace like:
EVERY bit of bolt on plastic (except one of the under seat plastic panels).
headlight/shroud and fairing
taillight
radiator (if i damage it trying to bend it straight again!)
front forks
front rim and spokes (may motard it anyway with an excel 17")
L/H header pipe
alloy bash plate (if I cant tidy the old one up)
some radiator pipes
tank is badly damaged on front lower corner, but may be repairable with some welding.
This is all i can see at the moment but will drag it home from the workshop tomorrow to begin the process.

Ill upload pics soon as I can sort out the computer as it wont upload pics at the moment...
may the fun begin!

with the bike sitting like that (with the YAMAHA emblem on the clutch housing sitting straight), I dropped the ninja forks down to that level so i could measure the wheelbase. the st xt660r is 1505, and the xtx is 1490.
with the ninja forks its 1470, so pretty close.
Im not sure about the rake/trail/offset yet as its just a thought at the moment.
Overseas I have a zx250 balius front end and rims that i will probably fit to it as it has a good front end with a big single disc that may be lighter for this application.

I previously had it rigged up to an xt250. bearings are all in order but forks may be a little thin. this is how it looked:

what do u guys think?
I reckon i could even use the rear rim on the xt660r as well!
Since the ninja triples slotted in so well with same sized bearings maybe the balius ones will be the same as well. ?
