Considering xt660x

Hi everyone,

Have been thinking of getting an xt660x to use for commuting after recently moving to Sydney and enduring a 80 min bus journey twice a day. I used to ride quite a bit of off road (kx250) but hardly any on road so I am going through the learner license thing here in Aus. I have a few questions about buying 2nd hand bikes so I was glad to find this great forum. Would appreciate any help here.

I have looked at a few xt's but a bit unsure of the following....

1) What is considered high milage / Km's? looking at one with 40,000+km's.
2) Seen 1 or 2 with power commanders / non standard pipes fitted. Is this considered a modification which is not legal for learner riders?
3) I saw one thread (maybe not this forum ) which mentioned some models are better then others (problems experienced) is this true?

Thanks for any help.

and to

You need to read a lot in this forum to answer all 3 questions.

An XT with high mileage would be one with over 70'000 miles i.e. 43'505Km

A powercommander can be used on a restricted (by facotry) bike and will make very little difference and no, its not illegal but if the bike has to be restricted then you're better off disconnecting it until you are at the legal age to use it.

some models have a difficult to thame ECU and tend to surge a lot, however we have quite a few fix for those, again read the forum starting from my signature line on mods.

Good luck

Welcome mate.

In Oz we do not have restricted XT660's, the law states if your bike is pre 2008 you can remove the Cats & have a max DB reading of 96DB, from 2008 on wards you are to have Cats fitted in your aftermarket pipes & the DB reading has to be the same reading as plated on the bike.

I have never had any problems with the cops with my after market pipes on my 2009 XTX with no cats & 96 DB pipes.

I would be looking at XT's with low mileage this will help with resale & you can get more usage out of the bike, how much do you want to spend?

Thanks for all the info. I'm hoping to pick one up for around $5000. I've seen a few 04/05 models advertised for around $5500 onco. Seen a really nice '08 model for $8000 onco but that is over my budget

Welcome mate!!

This forum is great and a people are really helpful.

I've bought a 2007 model about two years ago for $7.5k with 5000km. Using it mainly for commuting 60km per day and some weekend trips.

It's a great bike, real good fun. Always enjoy riding it. I've reached 27000km now and no problems so far. fitted Stage 3 airfilter and Leovince pipes and front fork spacers. Really happy with it.
