Oil change ... How much oil?

Hi All,

Just done an oil change on my XT660z Tenere, I followed the manual, warmed and drained the old engine oil using the two drain bolts, changed the filter and then added 1.9L of oil, started the engine and then revved her 6 times and switched off.

I then topped up the oil with 700ml taking the total oil input to 2.6L.

I then dipped the oil with the dip stick only to find it barely touched the end of the stick.

Reading the manual it said to top up the oil until it is between the min and max marker on the dipstick.

In the end I added another 300ml of oil, taking the total to 2.9L!

Is this normal??? I haven't ridden the bike since doing the oil change just in case I've now got too much oil in the tank as I don't want to go blowing gaskets etc ....

Can anyone give me a "YaY" or "NaY" as to the amount of oil please??

Thanks!

Assuming you're checking the engine immediately after running it, it'll be fine, go with what the dipstick says.

Just be aware that if you've filled it with 2.6l, thought it was a bit low, then spent a couple of minutes finding some oil, topping it up, etc, then filled it up and checked the dipstick without running the engine again - then in that time some of the oil in the tank has probably drained back into the sump, making the oil look too low/allowing you to get more in.

Hi,

I checked it immediately after running it so hopefully all should be well!
Been ill for the last few days so not been out on the bike yet, hopefully the dizziness will be gone in time for the weekend!

Cheers.

2.9 litres is the max capacity that you should fill. Topping up is not so easy when you do it from time to time. but the dipstick gives you a fair idea once you have filled all the 2.9 liters so that next time you remember how high it should be on the stick

There is an overflow breather somewhere under there I'm sure as mine has spurted a bit of oil out after being overfilled.
Keep an eye on your main crankcase breather pipe and maybe pull the RHS airbox panel off after a hundred miles or so to see if you've got much standoff accumulated.

Yup, I've already read up on the breather pipe, I emptied it just before I did the oil change, hardly anything in there at all.

Since it's now completely empty I'll hopefully be able to see if there is any new oil in there once I've been out for a ride or two.

Not had the airbox panel off yet ... perhaps something for this coming weekend!

I'd seen 2.9L mentioned somewhere before, but when I searched for it couldn't find it!

Hoping to get out on the 660 at the weekend, will let you know if she blows a gasket
