OK, new tyre time.

While waiting on the new rubber to arrive I removed the wheels and the old tyres. Then gave the bearings a quick check (as well as the breaks, chain and spindle), only to discover the carrier bearing (rear whell, obviously) is, shall we say 'lumpy' and in need of replacement.

The two wheel bearings appear to be in good health, but I do wonder.... Should I replace these too ?

Opinions please ?

- as each bearing is only �4 each (as are the two oil seals) it's less than �30 for the lot anyway.

I would say it best to do all the bearings on the rear wheel at the same time.
The rear wheel tends to go through bearings twice as quick as the front wheel.

Not sure what's in the ten but stock bearings are often open, it's worth the extra couple of quid to get the sealed bearings.

Do it, and while your at it, can you post up the bearing code for the carrier bearing? I've got a bag of wheel bearings, but have a feeling I'll be needing to change the carrier bearing as well in the near future.



(This may have something to do with riding the bike into a fairly innocuous looking puddle on Salisbury Plain yesterday, which turned out to be about three foot deep. Took me about half an hour to lift/drag it back to dry land. At the minute I'm more concerned about making sure I've washed all the oily, watery gloop out of the crankcases, but I don't suppose it's done the chassis bearings any favours either. Not a great end to the day)

I needed to pick up my Tyres so I asked the Moff-man to take a look at the wheel (Moff is the 'muckanic').

The carrier is goosed, but the other bearings are fine and he suggested leaving them alone. Which is what I'm doing, apart from some addition of a little fresh grease.

Cush rubbers are foocked as per normal, and the last inner tube packing is toast so some fresh rubber packing too.

The bike is going to feel totally different in a few days, not least as I've shod her with some Anakee's for a change (and a trip north!) despite a new set of TKC's sitting in the garage

quick update on the Conti escapes.

we returned from scotland last week in some of the worse rain I have had to ride in.
we came across flooded roads and up to a few inch of water running down the roads.

The conti Escapes were excellent, and were planted , they never even felt to be loseing grip. 10/10.

ONLY, because of the deal on the Anakee's..... Local dealer gets Michelin direct so the prices are just too good.

TKC's will go back on after the road trip.
