Airfilter for really dusty driving.
Hello,
Performance of the DNA Stage 1+2 is really nice, but I'm a bit worried about the fine dust that will penetrate the filters. I would not like to go back to Yamaha filter + snorkel, just because of the surging issue, but I really would like to be able to drive in dusty environments too. It seems to be a general consensus that K&N and DNA style filters are no good for dusty conditions. Is there an easy solution for this? Can I install a pipercross or similar filter for the off roady driving? How does XTZ solve this problem, I'm sure those have been driven through all the deserts in the world, so there must be a solution for this. Or am I overreacting? |

The DNA filters work fine in the dust. After 800 miles of the stuff last year (in one trip) the filter was still working fine. If you are concerned then give it a wash and re-oil on the road, it only takes 15 minutes.

Second GULGo's comment - BUT make sure you use the proper DNA cleaning kit - It has been stressed on many threads on here not to use the usual petrol/white spirits sort of stuff.....

or the K&N one work just the same, and is easier to source.

Sound advice there, but can I just add that you should remove both sides of your airbox and check the seals too. If they aren't seated correctly, dust can get in, with predicitable consequences!

I rode the K&N thousands of km through Africa, no problem. If you see the idle-ing rpm go down, it's dirty and needs to be cleaned, this was about every 2000 km. What made a big difference is the snorkel, I cut mine off, and my filter needed more cleaning than my friends with snorkel, it's especially bad when someone drives in front of you on the piste, so always drive first.
