regulator fault cure

hi, the regulator failure's a bit of a bummer, but not a hard one to sort out. mine did not fail, i just did not want to left stranded with a flat battery and an edc light on!

about 20,000 miles ago i replaced mine with a more suitable unit off a yamaha fazer 600, secondhand on ebay i gave 14 all in.

it has 5 wires; black, red & 3 whites. cut off the inferior connector and connect with corresponding colours, the whites [generator phases] are non specific to the regulator [any order]. now my connector probably is the weak link, perhaps in the future i will hard wire to the loom, soldering & heat shrinking to create a perfect join. if a failure happens just resolder and seal

because the 'new' reg has about 8'' of loom it's easy to point the wires down to stop any water ingress, secure the loom out of harms way. the reg needs a slight adjustment to align the holes, better to ream out the mounting plate wih a drill etc and jobs done. now start the bike, check the battery voltage, should be above 13v with a voltmeter. any probs give me a shout.

Nice work mate, this is the second time I have seen a Fazer or FZ600 regulator used.

Hi Stoic, do you know which model/year Fazor did your reg/rectifier come from?
Is it an SH650-11 by chance? More to the point, is it still ok?
Cheers,
Rick

hi Rick,it looks like the sh650-11 or the 12 would do fine. not precisely sure which one i got, it was pot luck on ebay 16 all in, of course a second hand original yamaha unit would be preferable to an roc copy. my design brief was it had to have 5 wires, wires about 25cm's long and looked like it mount easily.

regulators are like myself, kinda simple! realistically a honda, suzuki etc unit would do, the 3 like coloured wires link to the generator phases the positive and ground may be tricky, mostly red and black. some kawa's like the klr use 6 wires the extra link to the ign plus, they would be unsuitable

sorry i cant help with a definitive answer, the reg i got has been trouble free for the last 2 1/2 years and 33,000miles.

i guess your having problems with yours, how many miles now?

Thanks for the quick reply Bernard.
Yep, my reg/rec is finally cooked at 123200 miles and it killed the battery in the process (although it may be due to a failed repair/mod I did over a year ago when I replaced the broken moulded in connector with one on a fly lead).
It's good to hear your replacement has lasted so long. I had to make a quick purchase decision to avoid too much lost time off work and bought a new SH650-11. I was a bit concerned though when I found specs for it indicating it's max current is 18A whereas the Tenere's OEM one is 35A. However, it would appear there is a great deal of redundancy built into the OEM one as the Tenere's generator max's out at 20.8A.
So I guess it's just a case of not overdoing the accessories and all will be ok. Maybe even switch to LED indicators? As long as I don't exceed about 250w I guess.

Anyway, I now have a working electrical system........for now!
