I have just purchased a 2010 tenere with 2k on the clock. I blocked the AIS and removed the snorkel. The bike performed like it should without all that ADR crap on it. Question was will it run too lean? Could I get a definite answer. NO. I have the Australian model which as the Unifilter foam filter as standard. I did not want to do the fuel mod / O2 etc if it did not need it. I decided to find out for myself and booked the bike into Dyno Time in Perth. After extensive �runs� the verdict was the big thumbs up. The only time the bike came even close to running lean was at 1/4 throttle. The guy who ran the test said if I had a commander fitted he would have tweaked it at that point but the rest of the range was spot on. $100 for peace of mind�.Priceless. Btw it pulled 44 at the back wheel. Time to get off the keyboard and into the dirt !

Yeah, with the foam filter it seals up against the rim of the inlet opening. After the Dyno tune I did refit the snorkel and progresivley cut it back to see if I could get the same airflow and still offer some protection to water entry. After several cut backs it still wasnt as sweet as it was with it totally removed, so it now sits in my wtf box at the back of the shed ! Iam just looking at making a large 100mm "outer" collar to minimise water ingress, but not hinder airflow. The design could be better for a bike thats designed to go offroad but I like a challenge, so its off to the plumbers merchants and a new blade for my stanley knife.

I thought about doing the same thing to my bike, Dave. Then I chickened out. I once rode my '96 model Tenere 700km in belting rain from the Barossa Valley to Echuca/Moama. I figure if the same misery was to grab this bike with an unprotected filter, the engine might suffer from a drink it doesn't want. So I reckon mine might remain stock.

Your dyno result is a solid one imo, mate. My old 660 made only 36 on a dyno in Alice Springs, if I remember correctly. After much mucking around opening the airbox via a second filter, jetting and a staintune it finally ran to redline in top on a still day. But now age has grabbed me a bit, and I'm not so worried about it.

Having said that, my '09 model did go to near enough to 175km/h GPS one day, but I think the GPS was pissed. The tacho was pulling 7 grand, though. Don't know how accurate it is. (All testing done one a closed circuit in the name of research, of course. No licences were harmed in obtaining these results).

I managed to make a outer collar that is about 30mm tall ( I would post pics if the site would let me) This should keep the filter dry unless I try and use the bike like a jet ski. Even though the design in my oppinion is poor compared to most dirt bikes I have owned( horizontal mounted as opposed to vertical) there does seem to be a fair volume in the airbox to cope with water entry, just as long as you remember to drain the tube after. I have to admit watching my bike taken up to the redline on the Dyno did make me wince a tad but sometimes you have got to take one for the team, hope other people can benefit from the results

I wouldn't worry (at all) about water ingress on the Tenere. Here in the Lakes we know a thing or two about rain (ask anyone who came to the Lakes in May), we do have (oficially) the wettest place in England just down the road.

I've had my bike upto the bottom of the fuel tank in water (not by choice but necessity), without any ingress. Also some of the worst rain you could imagine both here and in Scotland - You guessed it, not a drop!
