Can anybody shed some light on a strange issue I'm having with my 660Z

Had a pretty wild ride yesterday and the Z took a swim twice, both times the engine was cut immediately and the bike restarted no problem. Got home later in the day and washed the bike then left it to drip dry as per usual.

This afternoon I happened to walk past the bike and heard a strange sound. looked around and saw the dash lights flicking on and off and the rev needle blipping up as per normal ignition on sequence, even the telltale noise that the dash makes when turning it on is there, but it only lasts about a second and does it about 20 times or so then stops. wait a little while and it happens again. The key is not in the bike while this is happening and the ignition is in the OFF position?

Bike still starts fine when using the key and no ECU faults are shown, only funny seems to the be immobiliser. I got the 5 long and 2 short flashes on the immobiliser light, used the reset (RED) key to reset it and the light behaved normally for a short period of time,now its showing the error sequence again.

Any ideas what the problem could be, could I have gotten water in somewhere that could be causing a short and could it be from the swim or the wash after the ride?

Any help on where I should check would be appreciated. Instrument cluster (seems sealed) or under seat electrics?

I have removed the negative battery terminal for now to prevent the intermittent problem from draining the battery and in the hopes of allowing the electrics to dry although its more that 24 hours after its wash but there may be water trapped somewhere I'm unaware of.

The bike is a 2010 Model XT660Z

Aye it does sound like there's water where there shouldnt be, and i think you did the right thing taking the battery off.

I would just leave it for a while somewhere warm, if the bike is outside try and leave it in the sun, if indoors i would put a fan heater near it to speed things up a bit.

The bike doesn't have an ignition relay so its sounds like the water has got into the back of the ignition (main) switch so if you can it might be worth removing that to let the air at it. There is however a fuel injection relay and if that has water in it it could backfeed the gnion via the water short, so i'd take the seat off while the bike is drying out too, and maybe disconnect the plugs to the relays too. Also if you have some WD40 or similar water displacement spray it cant hurt to give all the electrical parts you can get to a squirt.

Thanks for the reply, did as you recommended and left it out in the sun today. Reconnected the battery and all is back to normal. I have treated all the exposed electrical connectors and the ignition with Q20, our local equivalent of WD40

I'll try my best not to take the Z swimming again for a while but it's so hard to keep that promise with all the places to ride around here

Glad you're sorted - it's obviously a lot warmer there then here - if I left my bike out in the sun to dry it'd probably take about a week!
